[LA] SB6141 Not Listed as Model for Self Online Activation?

I'm deciding between the Cisco DPC3010 or SB6141 & noticed that the DPC3010 was listed on the self activation menu but the SB6141 was not. I'm looking for the easiest & quickest setup. Calling in to get it activated isn't a deal breaker, I was just curious why the 6141 isn't listed as a model on that list.

For everyone with the SB6141 did you have to call in to get it activated? I noticed a few people were saying that they just chose the SB6180 model & it activated. Would choosing the wrong model effect the modem down the road like with firmware updates or anything else?

ya not sure what you mean by self activation menu. but the 6141 is on the modems list for compatible modems and is a great modem and i would just call in and get it activated as it will only take a couple of minutes

Common recommendation is that choose the modem brand matches your local backend. That is, if your local cable plant is motorola system (look at the cable box they offer), pick Motorola. Otherwise, pick Cisco.

Well I know for sure cox around here runs Cisco for the CMTS, and I have used motorola a lot here. Which has worked fine for me, and the problems I have had would of affected any modem, regardless of brand. If you ask me which one to buy, I say the Motorola SB6141. As it does have a couple little added thing's to it, like a built in moca filter, and some kind of upstream feature that I can't think of exactly atm. The Cisco D3 modem's are just very basic with modem info also, once they have received a firmware update from the ISP.

That's the self activation tool I was referring to. After you verify your account & click new modem, you can choose different models from a drop down menu. The SB6141 is not listed there. Just thought that was kind of odd as it is listed on their compatible modem list.

I'm in Baton Rouge, LA 70808 area on preferred plan & don't use a cable box so I don't know what backend to match. Yeah I have read about the Cisco model not being able to show modem logs but I wouldn't know how to use that info anyways. LOL I'm leaning towards the Cisco more because we have already had 3 Motorolas & they haven't been that reliable.

I just tried it and got a oops message maybe the are working on it. I didn't have the option of online activation when I added my d3 modem. Calling in would be faster.

I don't think you can go by cable box anymore to know your CMTS. I have a Motorola box but I am on a Cisco CMTS. I think most CMTS are Cisco now after they made the switch to 1Ghz. One way to tell for sure is to find your CMTS Mac in your modem logs and then do a Vendor look up at

I don't think the CMTS makes much of a difference though. If your concerned about stability, that you may want to consider the DPC3010, if for no better reason then its one first 8x4 DOCSIS 3 modems so there have probably been more firmware releases. Most of it comes down to personal preferences and signal abnormality specific to your local area however.

Not sure why the SB6141 still isn't listed. I put in a bug report about this about a month or so ago after a post on our own forums, but this time I've emailed a couple people about it.

In the meantime, I know it can be activated by calling in. I bought one myself a few months ago, right after they were added to the compatibility list.

I liked it for the internal MoCA filter. In California, Louisiana, and Hampton Roads, you may get better/more consistent speeds after a manual firmware update. In all other systems, it should work fine out of the box.

I'm on Premier, which is 30mbps down/36 with PowerBoost for DOCSIS 3 in my market, and with the old out-of-box firmware (1.0.6.3), the supported release firmware (1.0.6.8), and the beta firmware that can only be permanently pushed in those 3 areas (1.0.6.10) my speed test has been pegged at ~39 every time.

As with all hardware, though, it comes down to personal preference more than anything else.

I don't mean to derail.
The Cisco DPC3010 will this modem work in the Gretna/Terrytown area?
Im looking to replace my old Motorola SB modem.

The Cisco DPC3010 is a approved modem for the cox network, so it should work in every cox market.

I think it's actually the #1 standalone (non-VOIP, non-wireless) DOCSIS 3 modem. 11,326 people in the New Orleans service area can't be wrong!

(Man, the random statistics we can get sometimes... )

Well, it kinda is. In my position, it's easier for me to find out how many of Modem X were online at the last scheduled polling than are overall registered in the billing/inventory system. 11,326 of them were actually online within the last few hours, and it's the most popular standalone modem in the version report.
There are people elsewhere in the company for whom it would be exactly the other way around. I have no idea how many are actually registered.

And to un-derail the thread somewhat, there are 192 SB6141s online in New Orleans and 177 in Baton Rouge.

Well to be fair, could that maybe have more to do with inventory, both at retail and warehouse, then "popularity"? What statistic I would be interested in is average up time of a SB6141 vs a DPC3010. Either way both are good modems.
