1 edit | PorterCable Finish nailer questions... I've a PC D250A Finish nailer that has to be 10 years old. It gets used sparingly over the years as the projects wind down (remodeling home with crown, base mouldings, trim work...).
Yesterday, I was putting in some 1x3 primed base for a closet when it was double firing (2 nails in one fast shot). Searching the net (i know...) there are complaints of this double firing and some suggest getting the trigger replaced with a limited one (I don't do the contractor "bump fire" method as I am not a contractor nor in a rush).
So I ask: do I get it sent out for repair (it is over 10 years old and never had any maintenance other than drop of oil prior to use). Or just get a new one. And which one: Hitachi Dewalt (I noticed a PopMech review and the dewalt and porter cable look identical).
I can get a DeWalt refurb for under $120. Otherwise, I'm undecided. Anyone have these models or same experience with the double fire? -- Splat
Update: I was recommended a Freeman brand nailer. I also got a msg from a friend that it could be trigger or spring and found this info. »www.ereplacementparts.com/porter···229.html |

VioletVenomLets go GatorsPremium join:2002-01-02 Gainesville, FL | reply to cableties I have the same model Porter Cable and rarely use it anymore. About 12 years ago I picked up a Stanley Bostitch 18 guage finish nailer. The Stanley is much lighter than the PC, smaller means I can get it into tighter spaces and it sets the nail with a smaller hole. The gun is still going strong and I've had virtually no issues with it. Oil-less is a plus too. In the past 5 years I've easily put 20,000 fastners through it. No brainer for me to recommend the tool. Think they run around the $80 range. |

At least that's what they did for me. |

Getting parts can be a bitch because of the change in ownership. Hopefully they can ship a trigger out to you quickly (and they are free--or at least they were), but I think there's still some M&A related disruptions. I have a PC FCN2300 cleat nailer in for repair, but parts are taking a long time. -- "You lie!" Talk about an understatement, Joe. |

 | reply to cableties Just an update: I called PC support and they sold me a "Driver Maintenance kit" for $35.
Aha, so PC and DeWalt are under same owner now...explains the similarity to each (see DeWalt and PC below)

Nail tray-identical; belt hook-identical...
Meanwhile I am waiting on a freeman model... wth.. -- Splat |

1 edit | Re: PorterCable Finish nailer questions...FIXED! worn piston nail head |
So, I called Porter Cable, and spoke with a very helpful tech agent. She recommended the "driver kit" after I told of my double-fire issues. It was not a free repair kit, however, and cost $35 + s/h. The kit arrived and I was surprised it wasn't a trigger set like other tales on the web, but the driver, bumper, gasket and silicone lube. I took apart the nailer (on the kitchen floor!) and WHAT DID I FIND! The driver (hits the nail heads) was missing 2mm of material compared to the new part. In my surprise, I put the repair kit in (minus bumper..see below) and fired it up, no more double-fired nails (test 2x4)!!! About the bumper, I was not able to remove it. The instructions included showed I was to "smack the top of the assembly on a piece of wood to free parts" but do not use anything to extract as it would damage interior. Bumper looked fine so I didn't replace. Lubed the o-ring of new driver and lined up with key (tricky) and pushed inside. Then assembled top (some pressure and slow but methodical screw-install-rotation) with new gasket (old broke on removal). Here is picture of the failed part, with closeup of the worn area. If you look at drawing in background, shows driver (part#3) with extended area for hitting nails. -- Splat |
