| New Installation on Villages - UBNT or MT? Good day all,
Their is a high chance that I will be installing 21 villages - tourist destination next to the pacific ocean. The main office/reception has Internet but these 21 places don't.
My mission: Distribute Internet access to all those Villages from a 70' tower already in place.
Average distance from the tower to all villages is short | ~ 450 meters.
From the tower you are able to see all 21 points and from each point you are able to see the tower *BUT with some thin & think tree branches in between*.
The general idea: a 120 degrees sector antenna with a base station over the tower and all villages with their CPE's. Than locate an indoor WiFi access point in every village. (Attached the villages map).
1. What frequency or frequencies would you use? Note: Please take into account the branches issue (villages -> tower)
2. What would you use - UBNT or MT? ( I know that MT has a flexible and powerful OS, more easier to troubleshoot, real time data, etc.). Integrated solutions or Costume CPE's/Base station? I believe having to select among these 2 brands budget would be no problem
All other advices all very welcome.
Thank you.

| I think you could completely cover all 21 small "villages" using maybe 12 hotspots. Tourists may bring any kind of phones, tablets and laptops. You could alternate 2.4Ghz CH1/6/11 to reduce interference but most probably each device will see a few hotspots. Of course 5Ghz would be best for the tower APs and also the backhaul so you can have 2.4Ghz for the hotspots.
Since you are flexible, check out the CPE+AP dual-radio product from ARC Wireless or make your own version using Mikrotik. I used to call them RemoteAPs in the old days and they were quite useful in this type of setups. Those RemoteAP's CPE side will connect to one of the tower APs using maybe 12dBi panel and the AP side will do the 2.4Ghz hotspot function with maybe 9dBi omnis.
Good luck. |

Good luck. I will second this advice. My gut feeling is that UBNT products are going to be VERY hard to locate. There are some serious supply and demand issues coming if they are not here already? While I also use UBNT stuff, I also have some ARC Wireless units that I really like and have done well for me so far. Good luck! -- »www.wavecrazy.net

 | reply to margioa The villages look like little cabins grouped together in two or three units at each of the 21.
So I would probably just suggest
2.4ghz rocket ap and 120 degree sector on the tower - this should help get through the tree branches by running at 2.4ghz instead of 5.8ghz. Run this on channel 11
At each village, have a nanobridge on the roof pointing back to the rocket AP on the tower. Then use an airrouter plugged into the back of the nanobridges on the roofs. Put the airrouters on channels 1 and 6. Dont use the airrouter HP unless you need to get through the walls and the standard airrouter isnt enough. Laptops can connect to the airrouters nearby.
If the transmit power of the airrouters is turned down so you just have enough coverage for the cabin and the other two cabins in the village, then you shouldnt cause interference with another hotspot in the next village over on the same channel.
You could even put up a 5ghz rocket AP on the tower also so that villages with line of sight back to the tower will have channel 11 freed up for local hotspot / airrouter use. |

 | then I guess the air router on the roof has to go in an enclosure?
Why not go with a Pico? I like the air router but the Pico will blow it out of the water
you can turn down the power on the pico accordingly |

1 edit | we can help you design and provide preconfgured MT hardware, and if available, UBNT hardware as well. We have experiences doing these often. |
