[DSL] Frontier Bonded

Hey Guys,

I just signed up for Frontier DSL Ultra 12/2 Bonded DSL and have been very pleased with the results so far. Getting about 11Mb or so down and 1.8 up very consistently. I just hope it stays this way.

Regards,
EZ

You are very lucky. Many are not able to keep their speed due to congestion.

Frontier has put VDSL2 and ADSL2+ bonding in some weird areas...my area has no congestion issues but we can't get either VDSL2 or ADSL2+ bonding. We're stuck at 6mb, so I had to order two lines to get 12mb/1.5mb and I'm paying almost $80/month.

However there are areas with bonding and VDSL2 that have congestion issues. Worse still are the areas that are capped at 5mb or even 3mb and still have congestion. I feel sorry for people in those areas...

How are you able to get 12Mb with the 2 lines? I know you can load balance them pretty easily but I don't know of a way to combine them. I was looking into getting two lines myself.

I use pfSense to do gateway grouping, which is basically multi WAN load balancing. I set up a firewall rule to direct all traffic to my "Gateway Group" which is the two WAN connections with the same tier level. When they're the same tier level, they're used at the same time instead of failover. The only time you actually get 12mb is on speedtests and using a download manager or bittorrent. I use down-them-all for Firefox and it splits the download into pieces so I use both connections. I only bother with this on large downloads, but it really works well.

Unfortunately it doesn't work for normal applications like YouTube, Netflix, etc. But 6mb is more than enough to run 1080p on either of those, so if you can get 6mb, this is a great solution. Plus, because Netflix, YouTube, OS updates, etc can't hog the entire 12mb, you always have some bandwidth free for normal use. My internet browsing isn't much faster, but I have definitely noticed less downtime and more responsive web browsing when downloading or uploading.

If you want a quick video on how it's done, I put one on YouTube a few weeks ago. Youtube.com/jamesonnorth and just look for the pfSense video--I don't have many on there, so it should be easy to find. Let me know (PM or start a new thread) if you have any questions.

Unless you already know how to do all the load balancing stuff, in which case you might have been asking if I just bonded the connection myself. That answer is no, because bonding requires something on the CO side of the line too. It's not entirely in the residence.

Still working great. I consistently get 11/1.8 on the down and up. Speed test won't show show it but I download a lot of big files via news groups and get 1400-1500 kB/s. I live in BFE so there's really no congestion at all. For example my road ( secondary ) is about 3 miles and we only have about 28 houses on it and maybe 5 or 6 of those have DSL. So I feel very lucky to have gotten this from Frontier. I gave up 5.5 Mb cable internet that I had for 6 years to go with this and it's $20/month less.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Good for you, it is always good to hear when someone is getting what they contracted for. By the way what is "BFE"?

You sir are lucky i get 1.5 down and .4 up and the tech that came out told me to call and ask for a bonded line... of course customer service and tech support tell me they don't offer bonded lines here... how is it that it doesn't make sense to me

Bonding is aggregating multiple adsl lines into one fat pipe with one ip address but the ISP has to support it and so does your router. It has nothing to do with multiple wan load balancing which is a waste of bandwidth imo. There are many ways to do it, MLPPP etc. The nice thing about bonded adsl is that it is just as useful as load balancing if one pipe drops off line. The remaining lines will keep humming along albeit at lower total bandwidth. When all lines are up, you have a fatter pipe unlike load balanced lines.

There is at least one ISP in our area that will do bonded but it is not a consumer grade package. Frontier's website is so bad I can't even look up where to upgrade packages. Unbelievably useless website. It makes me sick!

I build my own firewall/router and have a four port PCI ADSL modem that I am waiting to make use of.
