DVR options

Recently Cablevision totally screwed up our billing which has been on automatic pay for over a decade. It is a very long story I won't bore you all with but we finally got it somewhat figured out. I was pretty steamed about the whole thing and was seriously considering going to another provider for TV and ditching phone altogether as we really only use our cell phones anyway. So I talked with a nice girl in disconnects and she said she could lower our rate and give us extra services. So I reluctantly agreed and she turned things on as well as sending us a new box. Well we had already gotten a Samsung replacement for one of our 3 boxes and at first thought it was pretty good but we have come to hate this box with a passion. One of the things we were "given" to stay with CV was DVR+ well I can honestly tell you it is the worst damn thing in the world. The fact that they charge people for this non-service is comical. I would never pay for this service now after having it for only a week or two. You cannot do any of the things we are used to doing on the DVR box like pause live TV. rewind, etc.

So my question is what are the options through CV for DVR cableboxes? Are the SA HD DVR boxes the only option they give for a DVR box? Can I purchase a box of my own and use it on CV's network? What about Tivo is it any better at recording and watching TV than the SA boxes?

I mean we have an SA HD DVR box now and it works OK I guess it is still much better than the Samsung box which takes like 3-4 seconds to just change channels???? What is up with that anyway? The regular cable box SD on our regular 13" TV in the kitchen is like lightening fast at changing channels. The 2 HD boxes just take forever to change channels. I switched from HDMI to Component input/output and that seemed to help slightly on the SA box. I have not tried that on the Samsung box and probably won't as we are going to just ditch that box and get another built in DVR box so we can do what we are used to doing. So the "deal" the girl gave me in disconnects has not turned out to be much of a deal after all. We did get a reduction in our bill and she did bump the speed on my boost connection but I was happy with regular boost Boost+ doesn't really light my fire at all.

Sorry for the rant but the service has steadily gotten worse mostly the TV I mean it is really bad pixelation, stuttering, stalls, audio dropouts you name we see it every single day.

Fortunately for those of us in New Jersey DVR+ is not available yet. I suggest you first schedule a tech visit for the video problems. You should also swap the Samsung box. I had to return 3 boxes in one day before I was given one that worked well. You can also try Tivo. It has a huge fan club.

Why do these boxes take so damn long to change channels? It is excruciating and makes watching TV stressful and it should be enjoyable.

If you want to be able to rewind live* TV with your current setup, you can hit "pause" then instantly hit play to resume. Because you're a second behind, you will constantly be able to rewind 15 minutes (up to the point you initially paused) until you tune off.

*just a few second delay

Well I tried that and it doesn't work or I am not doing something right? I hit pause and it pauses but then I hit play and it just starts playing from wherever the show is currently? No rewinding at all? I just think these Samsung boxes stink and I am going to look into Tivo and a cablecard I think.

I did this at a friend's house last month. I don't have DVR+, but I knew it was something we would want to see replays of. I think there was 3-5 seconds between when I paused & re-played. It's not an ideal situation by any stretch of the imagination, but I did get it to work.

Pause the beginning of the show then press play then you can pause it whenever you want maybe it will work that way.

It shouldn't matter. You aren't getting the live HD/SD box feed, you are getting the mpeg feed used for DVR+ recordings and the app when you pause & resume (without resuming @ live, resuming at the paused place). It's going to send the channel regardless of program. After it ends, it should continue to stream the next program from the start.

Do yourself a favor and return those Samsung boxes. Call Tivo and ask about the free Tivo Premiere deal. They will give you a 75 HD hour / 628 standard def hours TiVo dual tuner box free. Just agree to have service 2 years. I got 3 of them . Call Cv and ask them to have cable cards installed. You will not regret it. And if you want to add more storage theres lots of options including attaching an external sata drive available in 1 terabyte for now. My TiVo now has about 245 HD hours and 2300 standard hours. Everyone in the house has their own dvr. The Cablevision DVR Plus is the worst DVR in the universe. Even when you press pause and try to press play most of the time you get an error message. One note though, I had an adventure recently installing cable cards so be prepared to be patient.

Optimum is having the same DVR+ problems today exactly the same as problems people where complaining about 2 years ago like lag time on FF and rewind, slow guide response... etc.

When you call their CS they act like the problems have never happened before, your the only one having the problem, you need to call and get a "technician" to check it out

DVR+ is STILL not ready for prime time. It is a POS. If they don't fix it soon I'm outta here.

Now that Tivo has the Mini, I'm seriously considering going with a Tivo Premiere 4 and a Mini and getting rid of my SA8300HD, SA4250HD and DVR+. My only concern right now is that the Mini takes up a tuner all the time giving you only 3 to record, so I might hold out until they fix that.
