Most / Least favourite home improvement task?Spent a quality day today; doing the thing I arguably like least... Mudding drywall. But it gave me time to think - we've got a wide range in here - from professional tradesmen, to DIY home-owners, to people who don't let not having a clue what they are doing slow them down in the slightest... What's your most and least favourite home improvement and reno tasks? My most favourite? Electrical, by far... Least favourite? As mentioned above - taping/mudding drywall... Roofing is probably a close second, though. |

Because when your done it does not look like you did anything - just what or how it is supposed to be in the first place. The name of the forum is Home Improvement, not home maintenance. If it looks exactly the same as before, you didn't do it good enough. Least favorite: Anything that costs me money but doesn't add real value. Painting, drywall repair, and wallpaper removal all fall under this. Most favorite: Projects that when I'm done make a huge difference. A few years ago I took the opportunity after some hail damage to replace a roof and all the faded aluminum siding. House looks drastically different and better. Probably didn't add a ton to the value of the house, but none the less worth it anyways. |

Least is a tie between prepping for-cleaning up after painting and plumbing (especially bathroom plumbing). Most favorite is working with the irrigation water for the yard and garden. My wife calls it playing with water, says I just haven't grown out of it since childhood. I keep trying to make our use of it more efficient so as to reduce the amount of treated water we have to pay for. We get water from the ditch 2-4 times a week, 2 days just a little 2 days a full head. The last 2 years that has been cut in half because of drought conditions. |

That question made me think for a while. Most favorite: making things work (regardless whether it is mechanical, electrical or plumbing) Least favorite: making things look good (don't look too closely; at least it works now) |

Drywall is least favorite. Mostly as I really need to learn how to do it correctly. Any plumbing with soldering would be next worse. I could do it but would not want to seal it up behind a wall for years. General plumbing is fine. |

Most favourite: Electrical. I actually find reading the electrical code interesting. I almost ditched university to be an electrician. As much as I like computers, now that I'm in a desk job I wish I had gone through with it.
Least favourite: Plumbing. I somewhat enjoy planning out new plumbing; it's more challenging than I thought it would be. But I hate the maintenance (i.e. troubleshooting clogged drains), and laying new plumbing under a basement floor. Ugh. |

Can't stand painting but then I have color issues. If more than one coat has to go on then the coats have to 2 to very different colors or I can't see where I left off. |

I can't stand drywall & painting so I hire them out. I hate doing insulation as well but it's just not cost effective to hire that out so of the things I do insulation is the worst.
Nothing I would consider I like. I'd prefer to do anything entertaining over home improvements. I do home improvement stuff because it needs to get done. It's nice to see a finished project it's just doing it sucks. If money were no object I'd never do another home improvement project myself again. |

Least favorite: Prep work Most favorite: the actual build work
I have found I don't mind breaking my back building stuff, fixing stuff, painting stuff, etc. But the prep-work annoys the hell out of me. It ends up being a lot of work just to make things look worse. Immediately following that, my least favorite is anything that requires I crawl around in a cramped, hot attic filled with fiberglass insulation. Mostly because I always forget to wear proper attire and end up itching for a week after. |

Most favourite: electrical. I'm actually not an electrician but the stuff I can legally do I really enjoy. I wired my home with cat5e recently and now enjoy gigabit ethernet in most rooms. According to network statistics I did a pretty good job.
Least favourite: remediation of things like mold and pet urine. The person who lived in this house before us didn't take good care of the place, to say the least. I'm good at it now, but still hate it. |
