TonyB join:2013-03-13 Park Ridge, IL 1 edit | WOW ARRIS Media Gateway Port Forwarding UPNP I have an issue that I was hoping someone can solve for me.
I have an XBOX and a PC.
I would like to use port #3074 on both the XBOX and the PC at different times.(Not at the same time.)
1. I reset my router. 2. I turn my XBOX on. 3. I test my XBOX connection and all is good. (It needs port 3074 along with other ports to be open.) (UPNP takes care of this.) 4. I turn my XBOX off. 5. I go to my PC and use my program that needs port 3014 and It's NAT is orange. It can't use port 3074 because it's been taken by the XBOX. 6. I reset my router. 7. I use my program on my PC and NAT is green. (Reseting the router released port 3074 back into the pool of numbers.) 8. I quit the program that is using port 3074. 9. I turn on my XBOX. 10. I test the connection and it's not optimal because port 3074 has been taken by my PC program.
Question 1: Is UPNP supposed to take back the port for each new program or IP address that needs it automatically?
Question 2: Is there any other workaround for my problem with this router?
Thanks in advance! |

| If it were me, I'd stick the Xbox in the DMZ since it doesn't really need that much protection from the outside world... and just set the port forwarded to your PC under the virtual servers section. I THINK this will solve the issue, but give it a try and see. |

| reply to TonyB Both cannot be assigned the same port at the same time, that's for sure. In a DMZ/PortForward conflict one HAS to win and it's usually PortForward while DMZ handles all the others.
1) Manually switch them like you have been. A pain and why you're here to begin with.
2) "Port Triggering" is an old technique to switch service ports like this. Basically some outbound trigger from the box causes the switch. But it doesn't mean the Arris can do it or a good event to cause the trigger can be determined. See anything?
3) uPnP I'm not at all up on (banned from my network). But there may be something there. It seems two apps should be able to switch the config. Anyone? Something that can be configured? |

Does anyone have any other way? |

TonyB join:2013-03-13 Park Ridge, IL | reply to AlexE4 My XBOX is in DMZ mode but once this routers upnp takes the port it no longer gives it up unless I restart my router. |
|
 | reply to TonyB Try looking for some port-forwarding software for the PC
I did a quick search and their seems to be programs out there for this.
That way you can leave the router setting the port to the PC and the PC will pass it on if the forwarding software is running. |

| reply to Bill_MI Yea I was afraid that would be the case with DMZ/port forwarding... The ultraTV gateway can only really enable/disable the uPnP function... not much you can really do with it. That's the problem.
Edit: Any chance whatever program you're using on your PC can be changed to use a diff port? |

TonyB join:2013-03-13 Park Ridge, IL | reply to TonyB One question I need to know from someone that's technically experienced with this specific router is:
Is upnp supposed to automatically reclaim a port when a new ip address requests it? |
|
TonyB join:2013-03-13 Park Ridge, IL 1 edit | reply to TonyB BTW I Port triggered port 3074 again just to test and port triggering doesn't work like it's supposed to on this router.
In theory if I port trigger port 3074 when my XBOX needs this port it should use it.
When I turn my XBOX off and use my PC program that needs port 3074, it should then get to use it.
Why isn't this working for me?
This is what my triggers are:
Port Triggers Configuration Port triggers allow virtual servers to be allowed when a outbound port is accessed. Port Triggers
Description - Inbound Port - type -Target Port
AC3 XBOX -- 3073-3075 --- Both 3073-3075
AC3 XBOX ---- 79-81 ----- Both -- 79-81 |

2 edits | Port Triggering needs an outbound event to trigger it. For example...
When your XBox starts up, what does it send OUTBOUND? That can be used as the trigger that gets it the port.
Conversely, what does your PC program send OUTBOUND when that program runs? That would trigger it back.
And now I'm thinking most port triggers are 1 port and must be THE SAME TRIGGER event, it can't be separate ones. If you had a game that needed 1 port forwarded it could switch to any PC starting up that game, which isn't exactly the same.
Hope I didn't confuse.
EDIT: OK, you added some details. What's "Both? TCP/UDP? I assume "Target Port" is the outbound event but that's rather strange to call it.
You need an OUTBOUND event to act as a trigger. So unless these things coincidentally connect outbound to that same port, that's incorrect the way you have it. It's NOT easy figuring out a trigger.
EDIT2: Your second entry for port 79-81 is interesting. You have it set up so any box browsing the web (which is outbound port 80) gets ports 79-81 forwarded to its address. Get the idea? |

| reply to TonyB You got my curiosity up and I found this: »www.neoseeker.com/forums/24801/t···s-guide/
Not much detail but the port triggering setup does infer the XBox will connect outbound to port 3074. Then it sets up port 80, 88 and 53 which ought to keep it busy if others are using the network.
Now... does this work for the XBox? If so, here's a trick to switch to the PC: Somehow make the PC connect outbound to port 3074 and Viola... it will trigger the forward. How? At a commandline on the PC type: telnet yahoo.com 3074. You could make a shortcut with this command to make it 1-click.
Crude... but should work. |

AlexE4 join:2006-12-16 Park Ridge, IL | go to programs/features, turn windows features on/off, telnet should be in there somewhere (win7)
edit: sorry, found in control panel. |

TonyB join:2013-03-13 Park Ridge, IL | reply to Bill_MI I want to thank Bill and Alex for trying to help me out.
Unfortunately this did not work.
Port Triggering
AC3 XBOX -- 3073-3075 --- Both 3073-3075
AC3 XBOX ---- 79-81 ----- Both -- 79-81
UPNP is on
No other ports are being forwarded.
Firewall is on.
No IP's are in DMZ
Try 1.
1. restart router. 2. Turn on xbox. (Works great!) 3. Turn off XBOX. 4. CMD telnet yahoo.com 3074 5. Start AC3 game. (Doesn't work great.)
Try 2.
1. restart router. 2. Start AC3 game. (Works great!) 3. End AC3 Game. 4. Turn on xbox. (Doesn't work great.)
Try 3.

Removed Port 80 trigger from router!!!

I don't believe what I'm trying to do is reasonably possible with this router.
If anyone thinks they have some other way let me know.
Thanks again! |

1 edit | It took awhile to find a site that actively rejects the telnet connection. It may or may not matter if that outbound port 3074 gets a reply or not. I didn't think it would need a reply - you may have noticed the telnet takes a long time to time out.
But I found somewhere that actively replies. A blast from the past...
telnet ameritech.net 3074
Notice it refuses the connection very quickly. You might also try 3073 and 3075 since they're included in your settings.
Doggonit - it should work! Outbound to port 3074 should get port 3074 forwarded to any equipment that does it.
While searching around, I see some port triggering strangely requiring DHCP be used on any box to get the port trigger. I can't imagine why this is so but it could be something like this. |
