RickNYPremium join:2000-11-02 Manorville, NY 1 edit | Verizon Wireless Caller ID Name on OV - NOW WORKS This topic has been brought up in the past ( See: »[Optimum Voice] Optimum Voice Caller ID and Verizon Wireless ) regarding why OV seems to be the only provider that shows "Verizon Wireles" on incoming CID name when the Verizon subscriber has opted to set his/her "Share Name ID" on Verizon's account portal. I know the name shows up properly on Verizon (FIOS & POTS), Time Warner Cable, Brighthouse, and Callcentric.
I've had a post open in the Direct forum on this issue since October, and after telling me it was due to a filter that was in place internally at CV -- but they were going to escalate to engineering to have that filter removed.
Yesterday, I received the final response from the Direct forum as follows:
said by ooltech :Hello Rick,
We apologize this remained open for so long but we have been advised that effective today, March 12, 2013, all Verizon Wireless inbound calls will be filtered in our network and will display "Verizon Wireless" to OV subscribers. This internal process is across-the-board and no exceptions will be made. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience.

I guess they enjoy providing free advertising for Verizon on OV phones? |

I believe look ups end up with the company, doing the look up, paying a very small fee for each name look up. If it was to be paid to Verizon, or the Database company paid Verizon a fee for the look ups, CV might not want to pay Verizon since it is their main competitor.
EDIT I am not saying that their decision is justified or a good one or that they should not do a look up, I am just offering a rational explanation of what the logic might be behind their decision.

After double-checking the info that was given to me in the Direct forum with Wilt, it turns out the information that was given is wrong, and that the opposite is true.
Effective yesterday, if a Verizon Wireless subscriber opts to set a "Share Name" on their cellular line, the name WILL appear on an OV phone now.
I verified this just now, and it appears to now show the name. |

| I am asking this question for the "what happens", not "what support said would happen"
Since I have not modified a setting for CID name on my cell phone, it displays "Cell Phone, NY" (just checked now), but if I set my name with Verizon it will (after the database updates) display my set-name? |

Since I have not modified a setting for CID name on my cell phone, it displays "Cell Phone, NY" (just checked now), but if I set my name with Verizon it will (after the database updates) display my set-name? If you visit the Verizon Share Name page at »myaccount.verizonwireless.com/cl···ces_seun it allows you to set the name that appears on other devices Caller ID. By default, Verizon sets it to "Wireless Caller", although Cablevision had a filter in place that changed it to "Verizon Wireles" (even if you had a Share Name set) -- that filter has been removed.
Verizon lets you set the name to whatever you'd like (not necessarily the account owner's name)
Expect 24-48 hours for the change to become effective and start showing on OV lines, etc.
The OOL Direct forum corrected their response after I told them about Wilt's:
Hello RickNY,
We truly apologize for the misunderstanding. Optimum Voice is indeed now recognizing the CID set by Verizon cell phone subscribers and will display the actual name information. We are very glad to hear it is working for you. We are very sorry for all the confusion. Thanks so much for the patience you exhibited since your initial request.

Where do you think the names for the CallerID with name feature come from? The database suppliers that maintain the names make it publically available to anyone willing to pay.. Caller ID works by just sending the number -- on the receiving end, the company handling the call quries the 3rd party database to also provide the name.
You are certainly entitled to continue to not have your name transmitted, as I suspect many people would. But I use my cell phone for business, and when I am on the road and on the way to a customer's house, I prefer they see my name instead of something generic -- since I know many people won't answer the phone if there is no name or they don't recognize the number. |

 | reply to dm145 And yet as with anything, if a person is willing to pay, your name still could be obtained from online sources. |
