[VA] VPN errors

Cox recently installed a new Cisco DPC3825 and now I can no longer VPN to my office network. I am trying to connect using a Windows 7 Pro PC using PPTP. I get errors 629 and 691 on the PC. I am using the correct U/N and P/W. I have VPN Passthrough enabled on the Cisco. I've tried lots of different combinations on the Cisco (port forwarding, firewall, et al.) and on the Win 7 PC (firewall et al.) without luck.

I can VPN to the office from outside the home, so I think it is an issue with the Cisco or the home service. BTW, Cox is the ISP at the office too. Any ideas?

I would say swap out the gateway for a stand alone modem and then talk to your work's IT about a compatible router and how it should be configured. If nothing else, with a modem, you can go direct and see if its a issue with the VPN or a configuration issue.

try changing your dns settings to level3 dns like

4.1.1.1
4.1.1.2

sometimes vpn's dont like the cox dns due to auto redirect feature

Well the reason I suggest stand alone modem is both those errors seem to point to configuration errors on part of the VPN.

I would put the device into "bridge" mode , which should disable the router/nat functions of it. I found a blog on how to accomplish this with the DPC3825: »ohmsblog.teamohms.org/2012/06/ho···825.html

for what it's worth, I have cox as well and a solid vpn connection...up until quite literally midnight 3/14/2013. so about 1hr 17min ago. I can reach everything except vpn. My router is good. all ports are good. nothing has changed. At the same time plex media server is also unavailable. These were my two heaviest traffic items. everything on my side checks out. that being said, I'm thinking either cox is blocking 1723 or gre (47) now.

Cox is not blocking PPTP or GRE.. What purpose would that serve? Not to mention the massive stink it would create on these forums if it were happening. It could be a routing problem from cox to the network your vpn is on.

If I change DNS to 4.1.1.1 and 4.1.1.2 on the home PC, I can no longer resolve any IP addresses on the home PC. I have to use Cox DNS (68.105.28.12 & 68.105.29.12 & 68.105.28.11).

It is VA Cox at both ends (home and office) and VPN was working before the new Cisco went in at home. So I don't think it's a Cox routing problem, and how would I get them to look into that?

Those DNS addresses should be 4.2.2.1, 4.2.2.2, etc. Using those, I can get to the Internet, but VPN still gives 629 error. No joy!

You'll need to login to the router and use the opt out DNS servers 68.105.29.12 and 68.105.29.13 if you're having VPN issues.

Did it on the Cisco DPC3825 router. No change. Windows 7 VPN client on machine at home fails on validating username and password with Error 629.

No. Only thing listed that I hadn't done is disable IPv6. Did that, but no joy.

On the VPN tab in the Security section make sure you don't have any tunnels enabled.

Tunnel list is empty.

You need to put the modem into bridge mode which will disable the 'routing/nat' functions of the modem.

It doesn't look like it is possible to put it into bridge mode without hacking it. Maybe I need to get a different device from Cox?
