[Auto] 2013 F1 season thread...

Not sure I will be able to post much as I don't get the NBC Sports network. I doubt my 1.5 meg down will really support online streaming of the race as well.

So I will read about the races and wish I could see more than 4 racers this year. Other than that - I will get the highlights from SpeedCenter and Dave Despain...

But all of you who can watch - please post about the races...

Re: [Auto] F1 season thread...

Already got my DVR set to record everything. Let's hope this season starts like last year, with different winners each race.

Same here as far as DVR. I wonder how NBC will do with the coverage?

The broadcast quality is def much higher than the SPEEDHD., however the commentary are the same.

Qualifying is going to be at 8pm tonight as it was postponed because of rain and charlie whiting took forever to give it an ok when the rain was obviously long over, but to late as it got to dark.

It's gonna be great to watch an early morning qualification.

Redbull lock out he front row as expected from the 2012 evolution cars.

Mclaren is going to struggle this season. They showed up with a new car vs updating the 2012 car. Rules didn't change at all for this year.

hamilton in Mercedes had a strong qualification right behind webber and in front of the two ferraris and team mate rosberg.

I'll be watching this race hoping itll rain half way in.

Wow- that is better than I though Mercedes would be. Be VERY interesting to see how the tires wear in the race.

I don't get McLaren at all and maybe why Lewis left. Wonder if Ron had not left if Lewis would have bolted. I think they need to get Ron back as Whitmarsh seems to be lost.

Yes, mclaren strategy on q2 with sending both perez and button out on slicks when everyone else was on intermediate shows how bad they believe their car is this race. Usually the backmarkers and midfield will gamble on such strategy.

Sergio placed 15th because he didnt have time to turn back and get the intermediates back on.

Re: [Auto] 2013 F1 season thread...

Dave Despain could only show very small part of the race. Surprised to see Kimi #1 with Vettel being so fast but maybe the race weather was a lot different from practice?

5th is very nice for Lewis - good thing Nico had the mechanical failure - if Lewis had another one he might have gone off.

Force India seems to be about the same as last year...

Kimi was better at managing his tires and only made two stops. Alonso, Vettel, Massa, and Hamilton all made three stops.

Malaysian GP qual...

Massa is rather surprising and Mercedes has pace for qual is proven again. At least the McLaren's are in the top 10 - Lotus and Force India seem to be all over the place. Williams has to be disappointed in their season so far...

Sigh - it sounds like the fireworks were going off from what I read-team orders, orders being ignored (no surprise who ignored them), Lewis pitting in the wrong stall (stopped in McLaren's stall), Force India having a bad day with wheel nuts, Mercedes still surprising me with their pace...

Yep. Seb ignored the team orders to hold position and cruise to a 1-2 finish, with him in second. Webber dialed back the engine to preserve it and the tires and then Vettel started pushing him. Horner even came on the radio and said something like "Come on, Seb, this is silly." This was before he passed Webber. You could tell in the post race interview that Mark was really pissed off. At least Rosberg understands how to follow team orders. Neither he, nor Hamilton were happy about it, with Lewis saying he thought Nico should have been on the podium. Alonso and Ferrari really blew it by having him try to stay out another lap or two with his front wing dragging on the ground. That cost him and the team serious points.

I was away and finally saw the race I DVRed. Vettel to outright go against team order. You can tell Weber was holding it in. The race was a pitstop comedy of errors.

I know I posted the qualifying results but it looks like the post was eaten.

From what I read it was a good race. Red Bull really off their game and Kimi has a really good race along with Lewis and holy crap - Toro Rosso in the top 10!

Looks like it could have been a 1-2 for Mercedes but Mercedes is showing some amount of pace, be interesting to see if Hamilton can move up. Force India is reaping the rewards of McLaren being lost... Interesting you would have expected Lotus to fill that spot consistantly...

Hamilton moved up after his five grid spot penalty for changing gearboxes. Rosberg went backwards in a big way. Not a good day for Ferrari, with Alonso having problems with his DRS and Massa having two tires go flat. Lotus is looking much better.

Spanish GP grid...

Mercedes still in qualifying form for sure - they are not confident for the race though. Red Bull back farther than I would have expected with Lotus in 4th... And McLaren - lost still.

Interesting race. I liked Will Buxton's take on the results. He talked about how everyone had been complaining about not being able to push hard the entire race, instead needing to look after their tires. Ferrari showed that they could push the entire race and just do one more pit stop. Not sure if that's really what happened, but it's an interesting take on things.

Actually, Varsha is still with Speed. NBC picked up Hobbs, Matchett, Buxton, and Leigh Diffey.

I'd still like to see and hear more of the commentary and "play by play" (is it "turn by turn"? ) done with American English accents, and with more emphasis given to providing casual race fans enough information in layman's terms to ready them for long term fanhood.
Take the case of broadcast baseball. There's plenty of ERA data, plenty of pitch selection and technical substitution jargon given, and STILL there's enough time during the 3 hour broadcast to keep 8 year olds watching and learning. The same can and should be done - in clear American English for the targeted audience. Instead, I'm left wondering and checking Wikipedia for the technical details of KERS.

Even the graphics and race data is targeted for hardcore F1 fans. How about showing us more than 3 letters of the driver's last names as well as an easier to view listing of track position and time? There's so much data that can be shown that we're left wondering about constantly.

I find myself understanding and enjoying the coverage of the Indy series much better than F1 coverage, despite the fact that I'm more interested in F1, and like F1's technology and courses better.

BTW - as for NBC's better technical F1 video broadcast - IIRC, doesn't F1 provide much if not all of the video feed themselves? I remember broadcasts last year where the announcers bemoaned the fact that they were at the discretion of a worldwide feed.
