3 edits | [ALL] Telus Internet 50 experience Hi Folks, new here.
UPDATE Mar 14: SHOCK!!! After 24 hours of flawless internet service, I received a call from the same Telus tech (see below) to verify that my connection was good and that I am happy. IMPRESSIVE I must say!
AS POSTED ON MAR 13:
History: I want to document my experience with TELUS for the last 1 week or so. I am/was a true SHAW customer for the last 7 years, Internet and Phone. I had the BB50 with Shaw, however, in the last few years I jumped from $85 a month to $105 for the same service without changes. So, thanks SHAW, you are no more, sort off ...
Recent events: After reading online in forums, I found out, that TELUS was offering a Internet 50 plan (50/10) over fiber. So I called TELUS and inquired, if it is available in my area (I life in Edmonton, South Side, rather new neighborhood). So I ordered the Internet 50.
First encounter: Telus tech came out (nice friendly guy) today (march 13). He terminated/spliced the fiber and installed a Alcatel ONT (Alcatel I-240G-B) right in my basement. From the ONT I connected direct into my Netgear Router. The tech had an Actiontec modem/router, however, I do not use it (have no TV).
EDIT: The Actiontec is a V1000H.
What happened after: The service was not quite working for the first 4 hours due to a QoS problem in their equipment. Called Tech support and got a smart guy who looked into the problem. He told me, that they needed to apply a temp fix to get me going, and will do the actual fix in the next 1 or 2 days. All right, no harm done. After rebooting my router the temp fix worked and I had 50+/10+ speeds. About 3 hours later, the same tech called me back and told me, that the fix was applied and I needed to reboot my router, IMPRESSIVE, Telus is actually calling me back. I was impressed. Rebooted the router and everything works.
Here is a speedtest: »www.speedtest.net/result/2572134696.png
IMPRESSIVE! So far so good. The experience from signup to actual install was very smooth and good.
I will keep this post updated as I have more experience with this service.
BTW, the download cap is 400GB and SOFTCAP (CAP is not enforeced, I specifically asked before I signed up, and the info is approx 1 week old) and I pay $45 for the first 6 month.
So long,
Eddi1984
EDIT: THIS WAS ALSO POSTED IN THE REVIEW SECTION. I WILL KEEP ON ADDING INFO HERE (SINCE I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO EDIT THIS POST AFTER A FEW DAYS TIME) AND WILL TRY TO KEEP THE REVIEW ALSO UP TO DATE WITH EVENTS, IF THEY HAPPEN. |

Anon32 : yes the modem will stay sync at this speed. Its for overhead purposes. It will also be sync higher in a near future...(you need to right between the line on this one) -- I may work for, but do not necessarily represent the views and beliefs of TELUS Communications. |

 | Does anyone here know if Telus 50 is available in Vancouver yet? Before anyone think I'm referring to the suburbs, I actually live in Vancouver. |

You do have have to be close enough from the DSLAM/ERA -- I may work for, but do not necessarily represent the views and beliefs of TELUS Communications. |

 | reply to eddi1984 I don't understand how you're getting these kind of speeds. I live in roughly the same area as you and have a fiber line to my place. I have Optic TV and internet so I get that it's a bit different of a setup but lately the service I've been getting is enraging. I often see speeds well below 5Mbps and haven't seen 15Mbps since the beginning of the month. I'm a fairly heavy downloader but I was under the impression that Telus doesn't do a lot of throttling, is this not true? The thing that really strikes me as funny is how you're getting speeds around 75Mbps, that seems like some kind of crazy dream to me at this point. |

| Hi,
I live approx. 120 meters from the next DSLAM and have no TV just internet, maybe that makes a difference.
I do not have experience with ADSL or VDSL, never really had it, maybe that is your problem?
Or you are to far away from the DSLAM, but the TELUS people can probably answer that question better than me.
So far the speeds are very stable and no dropouts. It is actually much better than the Broadband 50 from Shaw. At this time, I am happy that I made the move and switched to TELUS. |

| reply to eddi1984 I just had Optik 50 setup on the north side of the city (around 146 ave, 125 street) the DSLAM is close by, next building/lot over is the box.
Initially when the tech hooked it up, I ran a speedtest on wireless, and I was getting 25/7. I asked him what the heck, he made a call, they changed something, and I got it back, 27/8.
So for shits and giggles, I ran wired into ethernet. 52/11. I could not believe I would have a drop of 50% on the download through wireless.
He would not provide me with the root access to the router. After he left, I logged into the root on the actiontec to look around (google =D heh), don't know if its needed to do this part but I did the following:
Changed the wireless mode to only accept g+n (I also tested it with only n, no difference) Changed it to 40 hz upper.
Ran speed test from wireless, 47/11. Success!
Tech was surprised I got 50 here anyway. I must be on the very limit of where 50 is available from the DSLAM because he said everyone else in my building is on 25, he had no idea 50 was actually available here. Another factor is the fact that some of you are reporting speeds of 70+, and mine is just a tad higher than 50. And yes, I have optik TV as well. |
|
 | reply to CuriousSam you will be more happy with telus at that speed than Shaw, no lag or slowdowns.
hope you joined the party buddy. |

| reply to eddi1984 2 week (almost) update:
So far everything is FAST and STABLE!!
I will test it for another 2 to 4 weeks and than switch from Shaw phone to a VoIP provider for my phone service.
I did not want to go with VoIP right at the switch, was not sure how stable the TELUS line will be. So more testing than will see. |
|
 | I am now going on 2 weeks with my 50MB upgrade which the modem is sync'd to 75MB. Its fast and stable. I'm sure once TELUS is finished testing 75MB, they will drop me down to 50MB |
|
 | reply to eddi1984 According to Symtex, there is no 75MB being tested. So we have to wait and see. 75Mbit/s on a 50Mbit package is for additional bandwidth for optic TV. I do not think that TELUS will drop the speed to 50Mbit/s. |
|
 | I don't have Optic TV, so I guess I'm lucky? |
|
 | reply to eddi1984 The way I understand it, you get X% bandwidth more to cover OpticTV, regardless if you have it or not.
Maybe some TELUS people in this forum can explain it better. |
