| [DSL] Email problem - any thoughts? Greetings
I have a problem sending email using smtp.gmail.com (DSLX's email).
I get the attached message.
It has been the same all day. I came here first thing this morning and there were no complaints. Network status- same thing.
Email program is Postbox 3.07. I tried it on 2 other computers same complaint. Tried turning off my antivirus email check and there was no difference. Receiving email is normal. Had the bright idea of using web mail and that works.
Anyone have any idea(s)?
Thanks for reading. -- Printed on 100% recycled bytes |

| I know, Nick.
Doesn't make any difference what is in the email.
Won't even send one letter (P).
Never should have gotten out of bed today.
My other email servers work fine.
Here's another message.

A little more information--- I went to my laptop which has Vista as the operating system. Opened the mail program and had boxes like this popping up all over the place. I over rode the warnings and was able to send mail. My desktops won't do it and I don't see any warnings on any desktops.. Any thoughts? I would go to Postbox support but it is nonexistent. -- Printed on 100% recycled bytes |

I don't use Postbox myself, but after looking into this, it looks like you go to Accounts -> Outgoing Server (SMTP) to change server name, port, etc. I would suggest you go there and deliberately change the port number to something else odd (such as changing SMTP to 995, which is an incorrect port for SMTP of course), then when that fails, go back in and re-change it back to 465 or 587 (valid ports). Just the fact that you're forcing it to change should prompt it to accept that you're changing it to something non-standard and hopefully unclog whatever false assumption it seems to be sitting on. |

I'll play with the numbers and we shall see. -- Printed on 100% recycled bytes |

OK, Nick, you won't believe this but you sort of solved this problem but what I will say here is just guess work.
65-no go 587-no go Default is 25
I tried to send on another desktop and got the attached error message and it lit a light over my elderly head. You mentioned updates and I thought -yeah updates- every morning I get the following audio message from avast! - "Virus data base has been updated" and in my opinion this is what happened on every computer that I cranked up this morning.
It has to do with SSL/TLS. If you need to know about that, I am your obedient servant. Now I have to change one more computer and I'm done.
Thanks Nick for leading me in the right direction.Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I must check the avast! forum to see what's going on.. -- Printed on 100% recycled bytes |

Nick, when the first of the avast! series came out, we were told to remove the security information and avast! would take care of it. It worked fine.
Now, version 8 came out on March 1 and although I changed the pop info to SSL, changing the smtp info to none worked.
Apparently this morning's rules changed but it would have been darned nice it they had told us it was coming. $%%#^^$
Yes, they are swear words. Killed the whole day playing with this.

The problem with that is that the AV creates proxy connection between the client and the server, which can play all kinds of havoc with email service.
If I am given the choice, I disable email scanning in my client. If there is a viral attachment, and the AV has the signature, it will alert on attempts to manipulate the attachment via the file management system; so you are covered, even without email scanning enabled.
If you must have email scanning enabled, your AV is the first thing to check when email fails! -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |
