My Credit Card account hacked???

So I was looking online at my credit card, and saw this:

First, two issues. This credit card isn't used for iTunes, at all. Second, I have about a $20-$50 credit on iTunes last couple months.

I called up MasterCard, they canceled the card, but they want me to call Apple up first to see if they can sort it out.

When she looked back on my transactions, I had used my credit card at the local Apple Store. Seriously? These guys go my info from there?

Sure hope Apple can sort it out right away, but I am a little pissed off that it would appear that their workers are using private information for their own gain. Like I wouldn't notice these purchases. (and yes, I double checked my purchase history just to make sure)

Crazy.

I highly doubt Apple Store employees stole your credit card info and used it at their own store.

Looking at what they spent:

I divided every number by 1.13:

$45.19 = $39.99
$39.54 = $34.99
$33.89 = $29.99
$21.46 = $18.99

The order in purchases is reversed.

My understanding is that Apple won't give out any info on this due to the fact hey need to protect "my account"...

It's a new card, a chip card. It was MasterCard that noticed the link. ( transactions done from same site ) (Same site as in, purchases were made at the Apple Store)

so did you use your card at the Apple store or didn't you? If you did not, call your bank back and tell them you need to talk to fraud department because that's what this is, fraud.

Yes, I used it about 2 weeks prior to these weird transactions. I tried calling Apple last night, but they weren't in. So I'm going to call them now.

You're supposed to get an email when you buy stuff from the iTunes store. You didn't get any emails?

No e-mails. I just got off the phone with Apple and they acknowledged that it wasn't me or anyone in my house that did the purchases. There is an e-mail address associated with that account, I can get all the info once I get the police to subpoena Apple. Already made the police report. Apple will be crediting my credit card account in 5 to 7 business days. Total loss was $140.08. I noticed that my balance seemed off on my CC and that's why I investigated last night. Crazy. But I really don't like how Apple operates their phone, it was really hard to get to a live person, and the system hung up on me (on purpose).

This will require some follow up from a road officer if Apple is able to provide any type of suspect information.
Please call (519)653-7700 and ask to see an officer.

Thank you,

What chip,....?

Perhaps there is a security issue with said chip. I've heard some kinds of chips can be read / compromised quickly without any kind of physical contact.

Chip cards, as far as I know, cannot be compromised. However, it doesn't stop a retailer from looking at the back and front of card. All you'd need is the 16 digit on the front of card and the 3-digit code on the back to verify everything. When you create and Apple ID code, you just need that info, plus name and postal code. The only people that would have been able to get all that info would have been the Apple Store, and it was the only place that I physically handed in my card to someone.

Anyway, expecting a call from the police, they want to take this further.

Bought a 2011 Toyota min van new from a dealer in NJ back in late 2010 which is now paid off. Right after buying it we had something similar happen (ID theft) to us and suspected someone at the dealership,...

Although, if they had poor / weak network security the info could have been exposed by other means,...

That's not something that should be able to happen at an Apple store though,...

You'd think not. My guess is that they used a throw away e-mail address. Think with the Apple Store, you can have your receipts e-mailed to you, and my e-mail address is also my Apple ID, which has all my contact info. All you need is the postal code to make everything kosher, along with the card number and 3-digits on the back. Whoever it was, they got what they wanted, and left. Just frustrating not have that credit card as I'm going away next week, and they told me a new card would be sent in 5-10 business days. Also means I have to change my slacker info. IIRC, on this particular sale, everything was done behind the Genius bar, rather than the usual iPhone+Debit(Credit) device they normally use...

I remember hearing similar stories on the news when smart cards were first introduced. The risk was that anyone with a smart card reading device only had to stand near the card holder to get cc info.

I think the only time I've handed over my card in the Apple Store was with some of their roaming cashiers. Even then the card never left my sight. When I've paid at the counter I just swiped the card myself and never gave it to the cashier.

ironically enough -- my fiance and i had our credit card number/informaton stolen.
we suspect it was one of two "out of the norm" places where we shopped during a month. at any rate -- we noticed fraudulent charges on our card to the tune of about $4000 -- with nearly $3500 coming from a brick and mortar apple store.

the sad part -- both she and i had our cards in our possession.

the credit card company is currently investigating what happened.

Sorry to hear that,....

In my case it was a bit more ongoing. We caught it early. We were able to act quickly which is good in such situations (new cards / secured bank accounts ) but these people were tenacious. They tried opening new cards at Macy's, bought a phone and so on,....

We played catch-up for a while but eventually they moved on to easier prey,...

The OP here is doing the right thing. Just keep on top of it and you should be able to get out of this without a scratch. Its not fun but not impossible to deal with either,...
