Citigroup: Cablevision Likely to Be Sold

Sometime Within The Next Eighteen Months

We all know this rumor has been swirling around for years. Karl mentioning top execs leaving might be a sign of that but none of us knows. If it did happen though, the alternatives...Time Warner and maybe Comcast are outright terrible. What are your thoughts?

Agreed. I'll stick with the "Devil I Know"...which isn't all that bad, all things considered.

A friend of mine's sister is the consumer services director for Time Warner and she said that Time Warner has been heavily considering the purchase of Cablevision. She also said that all Cablevision would be converted to Time Warner if the purchase went through.

We heard this rumor now for over 10 years.

Yes I know, but one day it might become reality. It's usually been wishful investment banks wanting to make a buck off of such a transaction. Lately though as mentioned above there's been more potential signs of one then there has been in a long while now.

Certainly not a prospect I'd like to envision considering their horrible customer service...

Their lack of investment and upgrades in infrastructure where there's no competition - »stopthecap.com/2013/03/04/twc-ad···-growth/,

The recent story where owe Upstate NY Customers $2.2 Million in refunds averaging $119 each because they had been overcharging them for service since 2007 - »stopthecap.com/2013/03/12/time-w···19-each/

Plus their speed tiers top out at 50/5 with the rest of their tiers not looking so hot either - »www.timewarnercable.com/en/resid···res.html

Plus having to pay a $3.95 modem rental fee they implemented November 1st, 2012 for the NYC region.

The list goes on and on as to why Time Warner Cable would would be disastrous compared to what we have now with Cablevision.

I'm not saying it would be a good thing, but I do think Time Warner or Comcast might bring something good to the table

Yeah like usage caps.

How are Time Warner's benefits? More specifically retirement/401k options?

Comcast had a better 401k match but I don't think they had any other retirement benefits.

Where I am located, FiOS is an option. Frankly, I care for none of the other cable ISP's (Comcast, TWC, Charter). From reports on this site, they are all out to screw the customer and they have no competition to keep them honest.

If TWC takes over, first thing we would see is price increases, modem fee, caps and reduced tiers. OptimumWiFi would probably start be an add-on charge (which it might be now with the $5/month increase).

Time Warner seems to have better equipment- channel lag is not a problem and they offer more channels but their internet supposedly isnt as good. As far as Time Warner charging for things, lets face it they all do. Cablevision "fees" you to death with their box rentals, additional premium programming outlet charges, sports fees, etc. Ive heard the best cable operator is a firm called BrightHouse. Maybe they would be interested in it ?

Complain all you want about Cablevision.
But I can assure you - after having to deal with Comcast in NJ and TWC in NYC - that we are much better off overall with Cablevision both service and cost wise. I will say that the Comcast TV boxes are much snappier, however.
If I had to pick one, I'd probably lean towards Comcast.
That's just my opinion.

Time Warner seems to offer more HD content than we get. In NYC the following channels are broadcast in HD which are still on SD on Cablevision, or not even carried at all. I know if its not HD, I dont even watch it.

Headline News HD
BBC World News HD
CSPAN 1,2, 3 HD
Lifetime Movie Network HD
Cooking Channel HD
Reelz HD
DIY HD
Hub HD
Hallmark Channel HD
WGN America HD
Sundance Channel HD

Agreed. I had TWC in Manhattan until I recently switched to FiOS, Comcast at a house in PA and Cablevision at a place at the Jersey shore. All things considered, Cablevision beats the pants off Comcast and TWC.

The sale is inevitable. I would HATE to see TWC takeover and impose usage caps. As much as the layperson beyotches about Cablevision, many of them don't realize how much better CV is than other providers.

When that day comes and CV is no more, people will want the Dolans back.

THAT is going to be a big deal. Look at the angst here about perceived (and not true) "caps". People are going to freak out if it really happens.

And this was just last month:

Cablevision Systems' sale of its Optimum West business (Bresnan) to Charter Communications for $1.625 billion in cash positions the New York-based cable TV firm to pay down debt, repurchase shares, possibly privatize, or put itself up for sale, analysts say.

Hopefully they're just going private and there's nothing more to it.

Unfortunately Fios isn't in my town so I wouldn't have a choice in the matter. TWC has had multiple price increases this past year alone much less for addons.
