 | [TV] Connecting STB to an AV Receiver Any of you have your STB connect to an AV receiver?
After 2 years I finally got around to connecting my CIS330 to my Denon AVR-888 HT receiver, I thought everything was working great until I changed from an SD [non Dobly Digital (DD)] to a HD/DD channel and was greeted by a loud popping sound.
If I change channels: HD to HD - works fine. SD to SD - works fine. HD to SD - works fine. SD to HD - popping - it's quite annoying and loud.
I tried optical / HDMI, I even tried my CIS430 and it's worse. I tried every possible setting on the receiver and still pops.
It is looking like I may have to disable DD altogether (and use stereo/dobly prologic) for TTV cause I ain't shelling out for a new receiver for TTV.
I had a Bell 9142 hooked up to the same receiver and it worked flawless.
Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks. |

 | Yes, we had a similar experience. HD channels are broadcast using Dolby 5-1. I connected the audio from the satellite receiver to the audio receiver, and everything worked fine until my wife switched to an HD channel. Then a hellish noise came from the audio receiver. I ended up replacing the audio receiver. It was not that expensive ($200.00), but was necessary because the thin LED TV had very poor audio. |

Thanks. I am afraid to tell you that this issue is directly related to your receiver. -- I may work for, but do not necessarily represent the views and beliefs of TELUS Communications. |

| I just had Telus in over the weekend and I wired everything through my Onkyo receiver. Zero issues here, Dolby 5.1 works great. Swapping between SD and HD no problems. Sounds great.
As Symtex said, I would say its the receiver as well. Most of the receivers I've seen (including my relatively inexpensive one) have a small delay when swapping between sound sources, which prevents this issue. |

 | Thanks for the replies all.
I've discovered that I have issues with my PS3 as well, looks like I might need to save up for a new receiver afterall. |

I've discovered that I have issues with my PS3 as well, looks like I might need to save up for a new receiver afterall. You could try setting the PS3 to PCM output and the STB (if possible) as well. That way, the audio decoding is done prior to the receiver, and all that the receiver gets is multi-channel PCM audio, so there shouldn't be that pop you get with changing audio formats.
You should also get a benefit for Blu-ray titles since this will allow you take advantage of DTS-HD/DD TrueHD tracks. |

The disadvantage was the possibility of ground loops (hum), which isn't really a problem at all when you know how to deal with them. Also the fact that the audio quality depends upon the DACs inside the source device, rather than the DACs inside the receiver. But that wouldn't be a problem either if manufacturers of these devices all used quality DACs and audio circuitry. |
