| [iPhone] Questions about selling an iPhone 4 So my wife wants a new phone and we were going to sell her used iPhone 4 16gb black but I have a question. It's still on 5.1.1. Is it best to update the OS before selling or is an old OS desirable because they can be jailbroken more easily (something we never bothered to do).

6.1.2 is still readily jailbreak-able. Before you sell the phone, Have AT&T unlock it. It's more valuable that way.
My iPhone 4 is JB and unlocked on 6.1.2
I wouldn't have an iPhone that can't be jailbroken. Without JB, iPhone is just another overpriced smartphone.
Not all potential buyers will feel that way tough. I would probably sell it "factory" at 6.1.2. I'm not seeing where JB phones are commanding a higher price than "factory".

To each his own. I'm actually waiting for the iPhone 6 to come out and ditch my Galaxy S3. That's funny... I'm on the fence actually. I have a basic phone, and my upgrade is available starting in a few days. I'm not sure if I want to bite for the Galaxy S4... or wait for the iPhone 5S/6 and then compare... or just say "to hell with them all" and keep my basic cheesy phone and low monthly bill.

Some people will pay more for an iPhone that is jailbreakable. Nice thing about the i4 is that if the SHSH blobs are saved for a particular iOS, it can always be restored to that version.
So just save the SHSH with tinyumbrella (apple is currently signing iOS 6.1.2, but probably not for long). |

People who who care about Jailbreaking, know how to Jailbreak. There's no added value there. Unlocking the phone (if you can) on the other hand will open up a larger market of buyers.

After playing with an Android tablet I am impressed with all the customization you can do with them. I will take my wife's hand me downs to use as an iPod.
Apple must be a bit worried about the release of the new S4 as I received a "look how great the iPhone is" marketing email yesterday.

Try Gazelle, www.gazelle.com. That's where I sold my iPhone 4S when the 5 came out. I did a quick look for a 16GB Black 4 and they'll pay you $150. I'm not sure if they still do it, but if you take your payment in the form of an Amazon gift card, they bump it another 5%.
