Bad Blocks.......

Smart Reporter....and Drive Genius telling me MBP HD has 3 Bad Blocks.........day or two later this increased to 56, and then 350+........

impending doom???

I guess I was going to reformat ( map out) the HD......but with so many suspect 'blocks is it even worth it???

Drive is backed up......actually using it now, but man, it HAS slowed down terribly...............intermittently, though.......can be fine, for a while then suddenly, seems 40% slower..........expected???

New drive already on it's way....................I guess I'm just looking for...........am I on the right track???..should I attempt DiskWarrior ( not gone that route yet)..........already rebooted and fsck'd the HD twice........any thoughts, replacement seems inevitable, right??????

If you don't already have a backup, you should backup the data on this drive RIGHT AWAY, since there is no way to predict if/when it might suddenly die. Data recovery services can be expensive.

Right ... replacement is inevitable. I just hope you took this as an opportunity to go SSD.

Look into the keyboard too. Looks like your "." key tends to get stuck.

Definitely get rid of that disk. I had one fail in my NAS a couple of weeks ago, and I acted a bit too late (unfortunately I wasn't looking deep enough in the diagnostics and missed the warning). I thought it was the server software freaking out for a while.

When disks start going bad, in my experience they're beyond redemption.

I have a few bad blocks on a disk in the past go away. Although that was a windows 98 machine and I believe the bad blocks were due to crashes/blue screen lol.

When a machine starts acting like the OPs, it's about fail. Backup everything immediately OP.

Thought so...................... ( oops!)

Funny thing is...from 3>56>370.......last 12 hours, no bad blocks I/O errors reported.....

Backed up already, was 'freezing' on video playback few days ago.....hope it's not the controller/cabling, (GPU).......

couldn't quite spring for full (500GB) SSD.....256 might fill quickly.............

Went for the excellently reviewed, slightly less fast Seagate Momentus Hybrid 750GB drive................We will see how it goes!!!!!

Why would you hesitate using Disk Warrior?

Because.......I was convinced from the 'get go' that it was a HD issue...and not a Filesystem one........

DiskWarrior refused to even repair the HD..........Drive genius 3 was attempting repair....but, it was taking an inordinately long amount of time

I wiped the drive, to map out the bad blocks, fresh install of OSX M Lion.....and even though I got less bad blocks/I/O errors, the drive still seemed to be hanging/slow.......

Just....literally......just installed/cloned/repaired Permissions etc the Momentus XT 750 SSHD..............first 30 minutes of use...and three reboots, SEEM to indicate it was the HD....and not the controller/cabling......we shall see.....on the uptick Momentus SSHD already seems about 15% snappier than the stock Apple 500GB drive........... especially shutdowns/reboots.......these are almost lightning fast...as they (SSD) they should be!!!!!!

PS Couldn't fix my stuck.....................................................................................................key

48 hours?? in....
So far, so good, and if anyone can stress a Mac, my wife can ( it's her MBP...) she'll have Itunes videos playing, scanner/printer software open, Safari with a million tabs, Pages, and PhotoChop running simultaneously!!!...all day!!!!!

Have to say Start Up/Shutdown is like lightning with this Hybrid drive!!!!!!!....it's almost worth the extra premium for that alone!!!!!

Hybrid SSD drive is very interesting, and V fast, lets hope it keeps going.....I might put one in the MacMini, unless pure SSD prices drop by 45%!!!!!

I did a 256GB SSD & store everything on servers, external drives, and the cloud. The days of storage & the OS being on the same drive are way over for me ...

Impending doom. Don't use the drive for anything valuable if you don't junk it.

TB Fair when we got this i7 2.7 MBP, it was an 'Ebay steal' and had evidence of being dropped, one corner of the MBP was 'tucked' a little......so, we kinda hoped the HD was ok..........but, given that it ran for about 2 months, then 'bad blocked' was kind of expecting it!!!!......

Hopefully, nothing else craps out!!!
