 | [AZ] Larger DLs (200+MB) intermittently stall; xfer rate drops I've noticed instances of downloads, usually larger files of around 200MB or more failing mid-transfer. When it happens, the download appears to just pause. The transfer rate decreases slowly, and the amount downloaded is stuck at where the download was when it failed. This occurred less frequently when I had my DOCSIS2 modem connected (which was not a router/modem combo), and I thought it could be my gateway firewall causing the problem. I just got a Netgear DOCSIS3 8x4 router/modem rental from Cox and now its a crap shoot when I download a file. I've ruled out my firewall since the new router/modem exhibits this issue on both wired and wireless. It is also the only hardware change introduced before the problem became a larger headache. I have also ruled out the client system since I've used 3 different devices--an iOS device, a Mac, and a Windows server. All of them are affected by this problem.
Any ideas what it could be? I've tried changing the MTU from 0 (default) to 1500. I've also tried 1492. No noticeable difference.
Thanks. -- My firewall keeps all the nerds at bay. |

Another words if you download a 500MB file does it fail at 200MB or 250MB?
Also what are you downloading from? You mentioned different devices, but are all the devices downloading from the same source?
On a site note, you might want to look into getting a stand alone modem. Makes troubleshooting problems like this easier, and allow you to buy your own router and control the firmware. JMHO. |

 | Thanks for responding.
During a transfer of a file, the file may or may not fail at any time during the transfer. It could be seconds in or minutes into the download. The amount downloaded is always different at the time of failure.
The file size only matters because the issue would be less likely to occur if the file downloads in seconds compared to minutes.
For the most part, I'm downloading large files from usenet (Easynews), but I've also seen the issue when downloading Ubuntu and CentOS ISOs from various mirrors.
I absolutely agree with you on the standalone modem. I decided to rent one first to make sure I would be satisfied with connectivity and speed before I commit to spending the $80-$100 for a standalone modem. Cox only rents the gateway router/modem combo. -- My firewall keeps all the nerds at bay. |

What about FTP or video streaming. If so, might want to try forwarding port 81 and setting up DHCP reservation. But my suggestion still stands about looking into getting a stand alone so you can purchase your own router. I think you will be alot better off. |

 | reply to Ntoxicated Does the netgear router/modem combo have an option to enable bridge mode? I used to have a SBG6580 that was a modem/router combo.. Needless to say the "routing" end of it couldn't keep up and caused great pain. It was able to be put into bridging mode and that cleared things up.
If you can't enable bridge mode I would look at purchasing a used cisco dpc3010 on ebay.. I picked one up for $35. I haven't had any trouble with it for a couple of months now. |

 | I wish it could bridge, but no. That thing is so basic that it gives me a headache. I was thinking about an 80 dollar one from Cox's recommended list. It was on sale at Frys. It's probably not anymore. I'll be purchasing one in the next month, for sure. -- My firewall keeps all the nerds at bay. |

 | reply to Optimus2357 I'll try some other ports and protocols. Interesting note: I've noticed that it doesn't happen as much when I only have one download going at a time. -- My firewall keeps all the nerds at bay. |
