Re: [OOL] New Customer.. Email/account question.

said by DarkScythe:

I do already have email accounts at Gmail and Hotmail, as well as a variety of accounts hosted on my own domain. However, there are a few places that require an ISP email, and will reject any of the free email providers such as Gmail. This is the only reason I used my Verizon email, and it's set to auto-forward those over to my Gmail anyway. I plan on doing the same thing with an Optimum email, but I need to actually have an account first, haha.

If you cancel your Verizon Internet account, Email Forwarding is canceled.

When I got my OOL service 3 years ago, he set it up for me while he was here. It was hard thinking of a username on the spot! But that username is used for Optimum Voice and to log into Optimum.net to pay my bill. I only use the email for surveys I do online to keep it separate from my "real" email.

The tech wrote it down. Seems strange to create your own account, but if Customer Service confirmed everything is in order, guess you should be good.

I'd much rather have them ask me what I'd want my login ID to be or have the option just to do it on my own time than to have a install tech who just wants to go to his next job make me an ID like "ooluser1111" and write it on a piece of paper I'll never look at again. Maybe it's just me..

Did your tech give you that ID/pass, or did he ask you to make one while he was setting up the service?

For me, that area is blank because we kind of forgot about it.
We didn't have any existing cable service, so he had to do a full install/new drop on his own, and there were a huge number of obstacles that came up.

By the time everything was finished, he mentioned if I wanted to set up a username, but I said I'd do it later.

By later, I had assumed after he finished testing to make sure that the internet actually worked. Of course, after that happened (and he had to add a splitter to get the signal down to acceptable levels) we had forgotten about it, so we just signed it, handed him the check and went on our way.

I guess this is why I never got one, but it was painless enough to make the ID on the Optimum site. Only worry was whether it'd be a duplicate account or not, but customer service confirmed that it wasn't for me. The biggest pain was setting up the email forwarding, because like Verizon's webmail, OOL's webmail interface is also god awfully slow.

I made the switch today as well. Your Optimum ID/password should be on the work order (pink copy)that you signed. The ID should be your default email address. I believe you can make an alias once you log in.

Okay, thanks everyone.

It seems you are not required to make nor are assigned an account by default with Optimum.
I have gone ahead and created an account and have set up an email forwarding rule.

Thanks again!

Right.
But you'll want an Optimum ID if you want to take advantage of features such as Optimum Wifi, online account access, TV to Go, Optimum App, etc.

You are not required to make a Cablevision email account.

I don't think they create that automatically anymore, but I could be wrong.

I also don't know if they are still asking you to choose between optonline.net or optimum.net, or just doing the latter for all new folks.

If you go to:
»idcenter.services.optimum.net/My···ntStatic
Then log in, then go to the menu item [ID CENTER], you should have access to all of that.

Edit:

And in fact on that page it says:
[New User? Create an Optimum ID]

Thanks for your reply.

I know I can go there and make an account, but I was trying to ask if everyone has to do this on their own, or if customers are supposed to be assigned one. (If they are, I don't want to make duplicate accounts and such.)

You can go on the Optimum website and create up to 5 e-mail accounts. (I think it's 5).

---------

Consider also (if you are not already doing it) getting a free e-mail address from Microsoft (outlook.com), or Google's G-Mail, or Fastmail (now owned by Opera), etc.

That way if you change your internet service again you won't have to change all your e-mail accounts.

Note that Microsoft (outlook.com) says they don't snoop on your e-mail the way that Google does.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to ask everyone a quick question.

I am a new OOL customer, as I switched from Verizon DSL a few days ago. I'm getting ready to cancel the DSL service, and that means transitioning whatever accounts I have left using my old Verizon email account away from it.

This is when I realized... I don't know if I even have a new email to use at OOL! Are new customers given an email address automatically at some point, or does everyone have to go to Optimum.net and register an account on their own? I checked it out briefly and it requires an account number, so I wasn't sure if I had to do it myself, or if they would give me one at some point.

I forgot to ask about this during the install, and the tech was probably quite tired at the end of the install since it was quite an ordeal to get it set up, and we were happy that it just worked and we were online by the end. I also apparently didn't get some pamphlets or whatever, and I'm not sure if those might contain anything of note.

In any case, are new customers assigned an account name/email address, or do you have to make one yourself by registering an account at Optimum.net?

Thank you.
