MTU settings Q.

My PC (running WinXP) has been tweaked with the MTU at 1500.
It connects to a Linksys E3200 router which shows an MTU of 1492.
The Zyxel P-660R-D1 modem in bridge mode shows an MTU of 1500.

Are these settings correct or should the Linksys be 1500 or the Zyxel 1492?

If you're on PPPoE DSL, everything should be set at 1492. If you're on PPPoA DSL or cable, everything should be set to 1500.

I was under the impression that Earthlink doesn't support PPPoA.

Also, IIRC one of the FAQs here says it is okay for my PC to have 1500 if testing supports it, which it does... or did before I added the new modem anyway. I haven't retested.

If your setup works when you leave some of the settings at 1500 and others at 1492, it's possible that the devices set to 1500 are auto-detecting the other devices and resetting MTU to 1492 whenever you transfer data to/from the Internet through your PPPoE connection. I suppose that the only way to be sure is to run the test again.

Earthlink generally doesn't support PPPoA, although Covad/Megapath [which was a partner of Earthlink for a long time] does. There were, if I recall correctly, a few regulars in this forum who had Earthlink DSL and were connected via PPPoA. I'm not sure if that's the case any longer.

Still using PPPoA here on Covad/Megapath provisioned line.
