Re: CIK Telecom - 150M*/10M - Unlimited

They have some nice plans, but the fact that I never really heard about them before and all the Chinese stuff is very worrying to me. My main concerns are:

1. There is barely any feedback as to the actual speeds being provided and their practices. Assuming they are on aggregated, wouldn't capacity concerns be up to Rogers? Throttling during the peak hours would be understandable, but I don't see them saying anything about that.

2. Support - it would really worry me if their support staff all spoke broken English. Again - not much feedback there.

Price is not everything after all...

I agree it isn't a bad way to operate. It just explains why they can offer lower rates than some of the competition. People coming in and expecting to get the same quality of service 24/7 maybe are not going to be happy.

Well, $100 for Unlimited 150/10 is not bad at all, I will have to think about it. $40 for Unlimited $25/2 is also very nice when it does come online in GTA.

They probably don't have a throttling policy per se, rather they probably only purchase x capacity from Rogers, and when that capacity is reached everyone slows down.

Signed up with them for 25/10 DSL as of Thursday. Been reading these forums a long time and decided to register to review this ISP since there's not a lot of info out there. I'll wait a week or so before posting a review but here are some early impressions:

1. Language - during signup process, I spoke with two or three people on the phone. All spoke well and I had no difficulty understanding them. I also spoke with a tech on the installation date and, again, no problem understanding him. I think this is an overrated non issue.

2. Performance/congestion/throttling - don't know yet. I have tried to do speed tests at various times of the day but every time I detect a slow down (so far, for about an hour in late morning and just less than an hour between 9 and 10 pm), I find that a family member has been streaming while another downloading despite my request for a pause for the test. I'll have a better idea in a week but I can say that it has never gotten so slow that anyone noticed while surfing.

So far, so good. But it's too soon to judge congestion/throttling issues. I'll post a review when I have more data.

You able to post a traceroute to Google, DSLR and a few other websites? I'm curious to see what their routing is like.

Does their availability checker tool actually work. I tried using it and all it does is take me to the order page without showing whether their highest tier plan is available or not.

Had the 25/10 for just under a couple of weeks now and have yet to see a speed test under full down and at least 95% up when other family members aren't distorting the test by downloading the internet! I keep looking for a congestion or slowdown period but have yet to find one, not that I am online 24/7.

That's DSL though, not cable. People are mainly interested in cable I believe..

I asked them for their Fair Usage policy and they provided me the snippet about harming networks not very useful information. or clear in anyway hence i chose not to deal with ciktel.

This is what i got as a response for a copy of their fair usage policy
*
1.9 Unlimited downloading: CIK might provide unlimited internet upload/download with or without conditions which is based on residential customers normal usage, if abnormal usage or malicious activities detected which endangers CIK network, CIK might suspend customer’s service without notice. CIK unlimited internet downloading policy is also governed by CRTC rules and decision, government laws, and Rogers/Bell’s policy which if any change, CIK will notice customers by email 30 days in advance at least.

Doubt it. Per CRTC reg's they would have to state so, and also include which conditions kick in a throttle. Otherwise the CRTC would come down on them.

Also, I doubt very, very much George Burger would lend his name in a resale agreement to such a thing, and then hide it from the consumers. I just can't see this happening. At all.

When I looked them over it seems they did have some peak time issues before going aggregated (or something like this). But from what I have read to date these issues seems to have been fixed with their upgrade. No different than TSI users who spend months and months and months with congestion before TSI did anything to fix it. So maybe you would like to also pop into the TSI forum and start claiming tsi throttles? Congestion before the upgrade appears to have been the case here at one time.

CIK's office is right across the street from work. They were taking a delivery of a new rack yesterday.

Is Richmond Hill serviced by CIK Telecom because I would like to see if the 150/10 Unlimited plan is available in my area.

It would be a massive upgrade from my 5/0.8 Legacy DSL connection to a multi-tasking and multi-user friendly bandwidth/internet connection.

I just reread this... Isn't this sort of clause in all ISPs? Say I use your Internet to hack Government of Canada, you have the right to shut me down no?

Yes.
If anyone is making a big deal out of it then one must ask why?
-Is their tinfoil hat on too tight?
-Or is it another ISP who doesn't like competition?

Yes but this is what they claim is their fair usage policy, which to me it is not as such. Fair usage usally indicates that there are softcaps in place on the Unlimited service where a scaling slowdown or discipline occurs.

Not really. In addition the CCTS would be on your side for this one. One of those rare occasions where they would be.

You say that and yet you keep going on this personal crusade to try and dissuade anyone who has doubts about CIKTel's capability to have a stable network.

If it's not an issue, why keep giving it attention? Try actually practicing what you preach before you preach it bub.

Anyone using CIK in Quebec ? there unlimited price is very attractive, I was going to get Ebox 500 G for 20 or 30 Mb but then I saw this, for peace of mine unlimited can be very good.

Anyone know what can be limit that can endanger their network ? are ve talking about someone downloading non stop 24h or 300-500 Gb per month ?
