 | Boost Plus web hosting question So I have to register a domain name to use the hosting included with Boost Plus? I already have a domain name, and I'm NOT going to transfer it to Hostway. It looks like there's no way to set up the hosting without registering/transferring a name.
Is the domain name free for as long as I'm a Boost Plus customer? I don't have to pay after a year, do I?
Seems a waste to have to register a new name that I won't use. (Not to mention thinking up a new name.)
I see Rick(?) and Spirit(?) have names through other registrars, and have A records pointing to the Hostway site. That's what I was going to try to do. |

I think this is more complicated than I thought. Hostway uses shared IP addresses, so they would have to know about the real domain name (not registered with them) that I want to use to access the site. So how can I do that?
Also, is Whois privacy included for free with the domain name Hostway/OOL is requiring me to get? |

Yes, it's free.

I registered the .net version of my .com.

 | reply to Hosting OK, I registered a domain name and set up the hosting account. Here are some answers:
1. Whois privacy is included, but NOT for the email addresses. So you'll need to use a disposable email address for the contact information.
2. Domain name aliases are $50(!)/year.
3. Dedicated IP addresses are $20/year. This may be a better deal than #2 above.
4. They have a Java program to upload files. It doesn't work.
So my whole idea of having my own domain pointing to this web site goes out the window. The thing is useless to me.
I don't know if my PHP program will work, because their Java upload applet doesn't work, so I can't upload my program.
So this looks to be a colossal waste of time. |

 | An update... I managed to get my PHP script uploaded, and it works!
OK, so now for the DNS issue of getting my other domain pointed at the Hostway site. I called support, and they told me to use a CNAME record. Of course this didn't work; it resolved the IP address, but the Hostway server doesn't know the other domain name.
I'll try calling support again, but does anyone have any other ideas? I can't use web site forwarding, because I'm already specifying an 'A' record and my registrar says I can't mix the two.
To summarize, I want:
a.com --> my PC on OOL www.a.com --> the hostway site registered to b.com |

My registrar was, and remains GoDaddy.. I have my Name Servers set to Zone Edit via GoDaddys management portal... The 'A' record for www.mydomain.com point to the Hostway servers. Somewhere I have it set so if someone uses mydomain.com it redirects to www.mydomain.com
My MX records are pointed to Fastmail.fm... My wildcard .mydomain.com sites point to the web storage space I have on Fastmail, so I am able to set up sub sites on the fly because Fastmail lets you pick any folder and create a website for it. It also uses DAV so file transfer is easy.
My use of Hostway for the main company site was because it offered advantages that I couldn't get from just using Fastmail for hosting... Plus Fastmail really is only good for static hosting.. If I wanted to add PHP or database stuff to my site, I couldn't use Fastmail.
I use ZoneEdit for my DNS simply because I have names set up with 300 second TTL's that act as dynamic DNS for my home cable connection. Those get updated from DNS-o-matic on my router. |

I strongly suggest using your current DNS provider to first lower your TTL values to something small (like 300), then wait until your current TTL's expire before making the changes. Then, set up DNS with ZoneEdit with things the way you want.

You have to do it through Hostway customer service. Thank you for your reply... Was this a one-time fee or a recurring fee? It appears the only way to do this now is to get a dedicated IP address for $20/year, or 'domain aliasing' for $50/year.
The $50/year charge is quite steep, considering it doesn't cost them anything to provide. It's just an entry in a configuration file someplace. Dedicated IPs, however, are a limited resource, and they're much cheaper.
And for anyone else reading this, they have a bug involving their Whois protection. If that's on, any updates to your contact information are not forwarded to the central registry. You have to temporarily turn off the Whois protection for the update to be propagated to the rest of the world. (I'm not sure if the sequence is 'disable, update, enable' or 'update, disable, enable'.) |
