[DSL] old building + old wiring = slow internet = not happy

Hi, I need help deciding what to do about my current internet situation, I don't have that much knowledge about FTTN, VDSL2, ATPIA vs TPIA, so i hope you guys can help me out. I have teksavvy's 6mbps dsl service but been put on the 3 mbps profile for a while now because of "stability issues" due to my old apartment building and its old wiring. I emailed teksavvy and this is what they told me:

"Based on these results your line is capped at 3mbps for stability. It is at 97% capacity with poor noise margins. If your profile were to be raised it would most likely cause intermittent connection drops or complete loss of connection, which would not be good.

I can offer some suggestions on ways to try and improve your signal but these would only work if the issue is on your internal equipment. Based on your Attenuation (33/60) your speed issue is most likely caused by distance to the CO where the signal originates. 33/60 suggests an approximate distance of 5.5km from the CO, signal degradation begins to occur around 4km."

I have been with Bell before and one time they sent this technician out to see why my internet speed was so slow and the technician told me it was my old building's old wiring that my line quality is poor. Which sucks because I really want internet that is faster than 2.6 mbps for a change. I asked teksavvy whether I would still be capped at 3 mbps even if I upgraded my dsl speed and they told me that "we may only be able to supply 3Mbps" unless my line quality improves.

So I was wondering if I were to upgrade to the 25 mbps FTTN VDSL2 dsl internet would my building's old wiring still cap me at 3mbps? Or should I switch to cable? The only thing that is preventing me from switching to cable is that I live in downtown Toronto and in an apartment building and I heard that Cable internet is not the best in that type of environment. I'm also worried that my old building would prevent me from get the best out of the cable internet.

If your building line quality is bad, switching to another profile (even if they let you) wouldn't help.

You could try Cable...just ask around and see what people in your area are getting.

Any type of DSL will be at the mercy of the phone wiring in your building, and your distance from the CO where it originates.

Are you on good terms with your neighbors? Try knocking on some doors and ask some questions about what they have for Internet.

If you find one who has Cable Internet, ask who they're with and what kind of speeds they're getting.

If they say "not sure", depending on how nice the conversation goes you could try politely asking them to run a speed test and show you the results.

Also, have you brought this to the attention of your landlord at all? The wiring is their responsibility. Granted, the lines do "work" for their intended purpose, so if they're not receptive there's nothing you can do, but starting a dialogue with them might be worth a shot. You never know what could come of it.

Another option? Probably not ideal, but, you could move. Start looking for a new apartment, and make confirmed availability of stable high-speed Internet one of the items on your "must have" list.

Good luck!

I'm not sure how teksavvys qualification works. did teksavvy say you qualify for 25/10 based on your postal code?

You could always quickly pop over to the bell website and run through it's qualification tool with your street address and postal code. If the Bell site says you qualify for 25/10 or 15/10 there, then there is a decent chance you'll actually get a good speed upgrade out of ordering Teksavvy 25/10. You could be in a situation where FTTN exists but you haven't been moved to it yet.

The landlord doesn't care unless the phone line completely doesn't work, since they're going to break down the building in a few years to build a condo. Also, with my current situation moving isn't really an option.

Based on my postal code yes I do qualify for the 25/10, the a teksavvy sales rep told me that upgrading to FTTN might solve the problem but I don't understand how FTTN would solve the old wiring situation. Also would ATPIA for cable internet help those who live in apartment buildings downtown? Right now I'm just trying to collect as much information as I can before I decide to upgrade because as we all know its gonna cost a pretty penny upfront to upgrade to any of the higher tier internet speeds at teksavvy. I might stick it out till the new pricing for cable and dsl comes out and becomes available for my area. Not sure when this year downtown is getting the upgrade to ATPIA though.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions much appreciated. I don't know if anyone can tell me more about whether FTTN and ATPIA can help solve or mitigate my worries.

So a teksavvy rep got back to me and told me that FTTN won't solve my wiring issue and that I should upgrade/switch to cable. Apparently if I do switch there would be congestion and quite a bit of slow down between 6am and 12pm and that with the upgrades rolling out for cable that might solve the congestion. Not sure how much the new upgrades will help though. So I think I am going to wait until the new pricing and upgrades to come out for cable. Thanks everyone for their help.

Not necessarily true.
It might not be wiring in your building, you might just be connected to the CO (Central Office)
Since you qualify for 25/10 there is a good chance that Bell will move you to a closer remote.
Do you qualify for 50/10 because that is guaranteed sync and then I would bet on my theory.
If I switched to cable, I would go with a provider that has ATPIA.
It's a 5+ month wait in Ottawa so I would go with start.ca.
If your wait is less, I would stick with TekSavvy.
I prefer DSL though (although it is more expensive than cable for higher speeds).

I checked with bell's website and I currently do not qualify for 50/10. I prefer dsl myself but price wise right now cable is better. Especially I don't want to rent from bell in the long run. The only thing about cable that worries me is stability and consistency. Just hope the new upgrades make it worth switching going cable. $$$$$!

I would choose 45/4 cable over 25/10 DSL but 50/10 DSL over 45/4 cable (higher cable is not an option).
I think cable is fine on the aggregated areas with a docsis3 modem.

that'd be 6pm to 12am. Not 6am to 12pm
