| [CATV] HBO & RCN new policty? RCN seems to have a new policy whereby you can purchase HBO/Cinemax (& HBO GO) even if all you have is internet service (and TV setup boxes). It is no longer required to first get "Signature Service" (A&E, etc.). This seems like a major policy change, whereby HBO can compete against Hulu+ directly. Will this be followed by similar actions by the other premium channels (Showtime/TMC, Starz/Encore) or possibly the basic tier Disney/ESPN or Universal/SYFY. Could it signify the breakdown of the monolithic cable offerings?
Or is it a limited fluke that only applies to RCN? |

RCN cable customers can now add some premium channels to their limited cable package and no longer need to subscribe to RCN's signature package in order to add those premium channels. Customers with internet service only are not able to do so.

Emilie Don't mean to intrude, but how exactly does this work? The lowest package I see is your signature package option. In essence, to be a cable subscriber, you need the signature package it looks like. If someone wants just HBO and internet, you're saying they can't?
Very confusing. |

Aren't cable providers required by FCC mandate to provide a bare-bones, basic cable package? Like one that only includes local broadcast/educational/community access channels? These packages are typically not publicized, I suppose because they don't have to be. |

RCN's services include a reasonably priced, basic cable service which includes 38 to 44 channels, up to 21 in HD. I am not on the marketing end of the business, but I am sure I have seen this advertised on bill boards in your area, on fliers that we send to customers and on the web-site.
My original response was basically to say that the cable TV industry, or should I say the entertainment industry, is not yet to the point where individual channels are sold for internet viewing only, without requiring the service through a cable service.

The way it is marketed is the 25 Mbps Internet is $39.99/mo for the first year. But RCN is ALWAYS running a "special offer" where you get the above with 2 Digital Converters for free and the "over the air" stations (limited basic TV) for the same first year price of $39.99 .
There is a slight difference in the follow up year prices. The Internet follow up years are $44.99 and $49.99 . If you have gotten the 2 setup boxes and the "limited basic TV" the follow up years are raised to $47.99 and $55.99 (extra $3 and $5).
On top of this low rate you can add HBO and Cinemax. I take it as a sign the pyramid is starting to crack.
It is not clear to me if RCN is only offering this "special offer" in Philadelphia and Lehigh Valley, and not in their other markets. It is not listed as a "bundling option" on the other cities. |
