| [NEWS] Malloy wants to tax heating oil and propane As we all know, Connecticut is the most undertaxed state in the country, and can't help regularly running budget surpluses.
Despite all the goodness that is Connecticut, it seems some still squander energy as it is so inexpensive. Reluctantly our papa smurf (aka Governor Malloy) has decided the state must impose a home heating oil and propane tax to help encourage people who pay so little for heat now to conserve some of it. All those homes Malloy saw (in a dream) keeping their house at 80F with the windows open must have spurred our Governor into action (not in a dream).
This is part of a green initiative, and we are assured the money collected from this tax will be set aside in a special green account.
Story here - »articles.courant.com/2013-03-19/···ociation
Heating oil dealers rallied at a public hearing Tuesday at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford against a tax proposed to fund some of the state's efficiency projects.
The tax on heating oil and propane 1.5 cents per gallon until July 2014, 2.5 cents per gallon until July 2015, and 3.5 cents per gallon on forward would feed into a fund set aside for programs that audit and outfit home to make them more energy efficiency. So far these programs for heating oil and propane users have received patchwork funding from a number of sources. None.
Off topic time:
Saw one of these Oil-Xtra Pan Am Railways trains today near Lake Champlain. 104 cars long, hauling crude from the Bakken fields at North Dakota to Irving's refinery at Saint John New Brunswick.

Quick math - 104 cars at 700 barrels each = 3,057, 600 gallons of crude. Let's say crude weighs 7 lbs per gallon. That's 21,403,200 lbs of oil, plus the weight of the hardware.
Anyone know who owns BNSF?
Think we'll see any pipelines to supplant any BNSF traffic rail's owner has frequent lunch dates and serves as a trusted adviser to the President?
Mmmmmm - nope. |
