Switching to TekSavvy, DSL or Cable?

Switching to TekSavvy, Which should I chose? DSL or Cable? Both services are available in my area (Vancouver, BC). And I know DSL is dedicated line so you don't share the bandwidth with other people in the area.

Saw a lot of people talking about DSL 7, however, it seems there is only 6,15,25 available here. Are they still using the the old GAS tech?

I also I have a old modem SB5102 from shaw. Do I need to unlock it before use it on teksavvy? If I chose 7.5 cable, is there any speed improvement if I upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 modem? (I assume not?)

PS: I'm with shaw right now. It is slower during the peak time. But it is fine for me.

Hello,

Due to Cable being shared, we never know how lines will perform. As for DSL being dedicated, you should pretty much always have the advertised speeds, depending on distance from the CO and if Capacity at the CO is readily available.

As for the 6, 15, & 25 meg service. They still use copper to the residence, the difference has to do with the equipement used at the CO. A different modem may be required for the 25Meg service then the ones used for 6 & 15 megs.

As for the 5102 you currently own. The modem should be able to be used with TekSavvy, but if you are ready for a Docsis 3 modem, you would be future proofing yoursel as well as helping yourself with congestion due to the multiple channels it can pick from.

If you have additional questions, feel free to ask away.

Thanks Martin for the quick reply. Any plan upgrading the DSL to FTTN in Vancouver area?

If you qualify for 25Megs, then you would be on FTTN

I'm in Richmond and debating whether I should go with cable or DSL.

What choice did you make?

Haven't decided yet. Leaning towards Cable because I don't have a phone line. So I have to pay for dry loop if I use DSL.

I have a phone line, but also leaning towards cable. Cheaper + faster speeds. But also that depends on your area.

If you've got a DOCSIS 3 modem node congestion isn't generally an issue. The exception to this is if you're in a heavy use area, for example a university residence, where you've got a lot of younger and technically savvy people. DSL however has more issues with line quality, which may prevent you from getting the advertised speed.

Until you've had both services at your house it's hard to say if either will apply to you, though if the system says you can get higher speeds than the package you're ordering that's a very good sign.

Unless you know from past experience with Telus or Shaw that you have line quality or node congestion issues I would go for whatever is cheaper.

Simple really...If you want 1999 speeds, go with DSL. If you want speeds other industrialized countries had in 2009/2010 that we are JUST getting, get cable

You must be joking right because cable upload is shit and doesn't even come close to approaching the gigabit connections other countries have.
