A call from Insight about upgrading phone Evansville, IN

I got the basic phone service and got an email then the call today saying they are upgrading the phone service to digital. They said they would need to come inside to test lines and install a modem.

My question now is (i forgot to ask on the phone) that will they start charging for this so called modem?

The "modem" they're talking about is an Arris combo EMTA (phone) + Docsis 3.0 Modem + Wireless Gateway. Rather than at the interface on the back of the house, your phone line(s) will be fed from output(s) on this unit. I'm almost certain they WILL charge you a modem rental fee for the new device, this is TWC policy and likely non-negotiable.

If you provide your own equipment you have a decision to make. The unit can be setup in Bridge mode if you would like to use your own Router (as it's missing some common features of consumer routers). You will however, have to have the unit to continue using Insight/TWC phone service since they are intending to turn down the non-voip service in a few months. Also, AFAIK Arris does not sell these devices directly to consumers, so that isn't an option.

You can opt to port your number to a different phone service, and if you're on a contract with an ETF they should have to let you out of it, though it might take some phone time working up the chain to get someone who has the authority to do so.

They won't charge you for the phone EMT, (if you only have phone service) but if you don't have your own DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0 cable modem, they will charge you $3.95 a month for the privilege to use theirs. So you will have two modems side by side. The fee is non-negotiable so far, as I have asked several times to have it waived and have been unsuccessful. I guess unless you tell them your leaving, then you may have some leverage.

Yeah, I actually purchased my modem a few years ago, had 2.0 Phone and Internet, and they did not budge with the modem charge. I ported to AT&T for phone and bought my own modem. AT&T was running a promotion on landline service, 15.00 for local plus two service features (I chose caller ID and waiting ID). It is about 22.00 and some change after taxes. Just a thought.

I also have my own modem and i will not pay the $5 fee. I will cancel phone service and go to ATT like you said or use magicjack. I'm gonna tell them on their scheduled visit next wednesday, if i'm gonna get a rental fee for that modem dont even install it.

I got the same call. I told them I didn't want to update to the digital phone.

After that I called Customer Service to make a change on my services. The service rep told me that by changing to the digital phone service I would be saving money. Sure enough, it will save about 15 bucks a month.

No modem rental fee. They don't change the cable modem, they add a different modem for the phone service. Again, no monthly fee.

I got the call and have already had the switch out happen. The "salesperson" seemed surprised that I had NOT heard anything from Insight until now about switching my phone service to digital. When I asked about the bill, she told me it would only change a few cents for the better.

Now that I see your posts, I wonder if there will be a rental charge for the new modem that they "forgot" to tell me about.
