[TWC] Latency tested at 67TW cable RR NYC. Motorola Surboard 6141 purchased by me and provisioned by TW. Apple Extreme Router. Desktop Asus board with Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller. Got new drivers from Station-drivers.
Both Chrome and FF are very slow loading a site and I get a message of "waiting for" xx site for a long time. My tests here are pretty good EXCEPT for a latency of 67, which I think is very high?
Suggestions as to what settings on the ethernet board, or network connections or the router might b e altered? The modem doesn't seem to have alterable settings.
Thanks for any help or suggestions of things I might try.

Post a screenshot of the actual test results that showed "a latency of 67". Without knowing where that number came from, no one here knows what that means and no one could offer meaningful advice. |

Sorry - I didn't realize that. I am now including the one I did at 10 PM which was 64 (not 67), and the one I just did now, when we should all be asleep. In the meantime, I reset my modem and my airport router and changed channels on the router - but I don't know if that matters because this is a wired connection. I also removed a DECT wireless phone from the area even though DECT is not supposed to interfere. Even so, at 1 AM, and with the changes which may or may not have had an effect, my latency is 44. I looked at my Apple Extreme Router Log and it seems that it is going in and out quite a bit. Don't understand it but when I google, a lot of Mac people have the same problem and can't pin it down. I'm attaching the test results. I'm not sure from the preview whether the file uploaded. I created a pdf. If this is wrong, please let me know the correct requirements for uploading. Thanks for your efforts and I look forward to understanding more about what's going on with my connection. Louise |

My ongoing monitoring from DSLR |
67ms is fine for latency to the DSLreports test server. Realize it takes about 100ms for packets to cross the US and a blink of an eye is around 300ms. |

Yeah, 67ms latency won't cause noticeably slow browsing.
Which speed plan do you subscribe to? What kind of speed test results do you get from speedtest.net?
Do you have any software firewalls that could be slowing you down? Also verify your DNS settings. Fast speed tests but slow browsing may mean your system is having trouble resolving site names to IPs. |

TW Power Boost. speedtest.net: download 19.65 and upload 1.96. These are pretty standard numbers since I got the Motorola modem from Amazon. Run Windows Firewall, MBAM and Eset NOD32. I've tried using different dns by running the Gibson Program which supposedly picks out the fastest. I've used those, Google DNS and have finally reverted to the regular TW ones which seem no faster or slower. I wish a private DNS service existed - would be willing to pay a bit for it because of how frustrating the "waiting" is. How so I find the log from my modem? Thanks |

This doesn't sound like a DNS issue, that's why changing DNS didn't fix anything for you. Makes using a "private DNS service" pointless in that respect. said by louise3000:How so I find the log from my modem? Are either of the browsers a "clean" install? What plug-ins are you running on them? What proxy settings are configured on them? How is IE running? |

your true last mile latency is between you and speedtest.nyc.rr.com which should be in the teens and only 4-5 hops away. latency to speedcached multicast hosts like google.com and finance.yahoo.com should be in the 30's. beyond that any specific url is subject to TWC's notoriously poor routing - i'm sadly seeing 90 to the a.root-servers.net regional dns server. bottom line is once you rule out your last mile, there is little you can do because TWCable does not have an established support path for poor routing complaints like Verizon does. |

@Louise3000 - Latency of 67ms won't cause slow browsing. WHowever, getting NIC drivers from outside ASUS's support site or Microsoft Updates can cause problems. If you know your exact motherboard model, download your board's driver from ASUS's website and install them. Then, allow Windows Update to run and update your drivers as needed. Let me know of the results.
It could also be your browsers need to be reset. This is especially true if you see many 'toolbars' attached to your browser. Truth is, toolbars are no longer needed and many are either spyware/malware or will change your search engine and point you to malware-infested websites. What is the specific website you are having problems trying to reach?
@Packeteers - This is my traceroute to a.root-servers.net. Latency is quite low in the traceroute until it hits Level 3's network at hop 8:

Looks like that is where the "problem" may lie if there is even such a problem. As for "routing", all ISPs typically use OSPF for all routing so that traffic is sent the shortest route possible. Notwithstanding, but traceroutes are sometimes inconclusive especially since ISPs and transport/transit-carrier routers treat ICMP traffic with the lowest priority. |
