Voip.ms offers free porting til May 15

Hey guys,

Hope this wasn't already posted, but I got an email from voip.ms saying that they would be offering free porting until May 15.

Pretty good deal I would think.

I have tried in the past to get Callcentric to match some of their competitors offers and never had any luck, so I'll probably just port out of CC to voip.ms.

Voip.ms really seems to be adding some nice features lately, just wish they would upgrade their web site to something like CC has.

I guess you can't have everything......

As I see the numbers (just looking at numbers, nothing else):

Inbound costs are about the same. CallCentric flat-rate inbound is 5.95, Voip.MS flat-rate inbound is 4.95 to 6.95 depending on area. It's a tie. [CallCentric also offers Dirt-Cheap numbers in many areas at 2.95 and offers many free NY numbers too.]

Basic 911 fee is the same, and anyone who is using this as primary home phone is going to want 911.

Outbound calling in the US market, 200 minutes on Voip.MS is 2.50, and 200 minutes on CC is 3.96. So a monthly difference of 1.46 which is not a big deal in the scheme of things.

Outbound calling (US) of 500 minutes on Voip.MS is 6.25. For 500 outbound minutes on CC you'd benefit by having their flat-rate outbound plan which is 6.95---and because that plan includes the 911 fee (which would otherwise be 1.50) those 500 outbound minutes effectively cost 5.45 giving the advantage to CC.

So I don't see a big price difference here, or any need for CC to (as you say) match anything.

[In these analyses, I am using the Voip.MS "premium Tier-1" US outbound rate, which is the proper way to compare VMS to CC. The lower Voip.MS rate does not guarantee transmission of proper CID which is why the rate is lower.]

---

Let's look at another hypothetical customer:

Voip.MS
Flat-rate inbound 5.95
600 minutes outbound 7.50
911 fee 1.50
Total: 14.95

CallCentric
Flat-rate inbound 5.95
600 minutes outbound 8.93 (includes 6.95 for the 500 minute outbound plan, plus 1.98 for 100 more minutes)
911 fee included in outbound calling plan
Total: 14.88

So I really don't see much price difference overall between these companies. I'll be quite interested to see how much you save by switching.

---

In my mind, Voip.MS does have two advantages:

1) Cheaper calling in the Canadian market. This is very good, but of course it is only 10 percent of the whole NorthAm market.

2) IVR and subaccounts. This is very good, but I look forward to other companies introducing this as well.

Voip.ms really seems to be adding some nice features lately, just wish they would upgrade their web site to something like CC has.

I agree with you on that.

What's wrong with their website?

I was referring to the differences in porting costs.

Anveo and Voip.ms both have much better deals when it comes to porting costs.

CC would not consider matching them. So, Ill save money there.

I agree, not a lot of difference when it comes to other pricing, but I always felt that Voip.ms always went the extra mile, and in my case, they really did.

As far as Voip.ms's web site, I just think it needs jazzed up a bit and also arrange some things in the same fashion as CC.

Just a personal opinion..............

I'm still perplexed because free porting is useful only if there is a reason to port....

....and to say that the reason to port is that you'll save money on porting seems to me to be circular reasoning.

But Voip.MS is surely a fine company with dedicated management.

Actually, I am looking to port a few numbers and I have been for a little while now.

I'm not thinking of porting "just" to save money, but if I have three or four numbers to port and it costs nothing to do this with Voip.ms but yet costs up to $100.00 at CC, well then that's quite a lot of savings.

I would think that most companies would welcome a chance to compete with the other guys.

I guess that's not always the case.

I'm sure CC has their reasons for not matching certain costs that their competitors offer, and I'm fine with that.

I really like both companies and I think they are both great in what they offer, so it usually comes down to the little things that will make the difference when you have to choose one over the other.

I'm not saying I have to choose one, but if CC had matched the porting costs that Voip.ms is offering I would have really had a hard time picking which service to port my numbers over to.

This just makes my decision a little easier.

Those are certainly excellent points.

If you have multiple numbers, porting costs can add up....

[Analysis and commentary]:

Historically, I think that PAYG/BYOD companies (which are usually the same companies that go month-by-month) tended not to offer free porting. The reason for that is that with no long term obligation, if there was free porting then people could port in one week and port out the next. The provider would have incurred expenses with no chance to earn it back.

By the same reasoning, full-service companies such as Voipo and PhonePower tended to offer free porting, because those guys largely deal in 1-year or 2-year contracts. Thus the costs of free porting were recovered as part of the customer's big annual payments.

There's some analogy to reproductive behavior differences between the sexes.

Back to the business of VoIP business:

One reason for the dramatic flame-out of the Groupon concept is that businesses found that they were giving steep discounts but not developing loyal customers for the long-term.

In a related example, hotels have little incentive to treat Priceline customers well. That's because the consumer did not pick out the specific hotel---he did not even know the [name] of the hotel in advance so there is no loyalty at all. The consumer merely sought the lowest priced hotel in a certain map area and of a certain "star" level. I mention this because I recently had reason to research this myself. Hotels typically give their poorest rooms to the Priceline customers, and indeed there is poetic justice in that.

---

The fact that Voip.MS and Anveo have been offering some free porting reflects the intense competition we are now seeing, as those companies seek to rapidly ramp up their numbers. Competition is good, the consumer benefits.

I don't know whether or not that will become the norm.

At the other end, Cablevision's Optimum Voice charges $40 plus a service call to port an existing number, yet they have ported huge numbers of numbers from Verizon. Of course people desperate to escape from Verizon landline may be willing to pay most anything.

Yes, that is a good deal and IMO should always be FREE regardless of provider .... but that's only my opinion.

Yes, IMO voip.ms do offer a comprehensive feature set .... however IMO QUALITY of SERVICE needs to be far more consistent across all boundaries. CallCentric quality of Service has been in my experience outstanding --- for me and my clients *** quality of service IS by far more important *** than a comprehensive feature set. It is very possible that voip.ms quality of service has improved since the upgrades ... I cannot really tell since I moved my more active DID from voip.ms to CallCentric.

Is this free porting for everyone? I just ported 2 numbers to voip.ms like 4 days ago and was charged $10 per number.

I believe the free porting offer is for American numbers, probably to coincide with Vitelity's offer.

Had you received one of their e-mails?

If not, then probably the offer did not apply.

As Mango said, was probably for US numbers.
