Re: [HSI] how to integrate Chater HSI into hard-wired house? said by whoaru99:The point is that, yes, a cable modem may have an internal DHCP server but USUALLY that is disabled from issuing more than one LAN IP when the modem connects to the ISP. I still disagree. This came directly from my modem configuration page for my Motorola SB6121:
"DHCP Server Enabled The SURFboard cable modem can be used as a gateway to the Internet by a maximum of 32 users on a Local Area Network (LAN). When the Cable Modem is disconnected from the Internet, users on the LAN can be dynamically assigned IP Addresses by the Cable Modem DHCP Server. These addresses are assigned from an address pool which begins with 192.168.100.11 and ends with 192.168.100.42. Statically assigned IP addresses for other devices on the LAN should be chosen from outside of this range"
So it was enabled out of the box. |

Re: [HSI] how to integrate Charter HSI into hard-wired house? So the $64K question is who is going to hook the 6121 to a switch and test it out? Also, there are absolutely no other features to control, port forwarding, etc in a 6121
Update: I realized I had a spare switch. I connected it to the SB6121 and then hooked it to 2 computers.
I power cycled the modem. Whie it was busy trying to connect to the internet, it handed the 2 computers ip addresses of 192.168.100.10, 192.168.100.11. As soon as the modem connected to the internet, the one with the .10 address got the public IP passed to it, the one with the .11 address went to a 169.254.xxx.xxx type address. My conclusion is that the DHCP server only works while the modem is not receiving a public IP. There is going to need to be a router when using the SB6121. |
