Residential Gateway - owned, but.....

I'm an internet-only user and am looking at other options due to increasing costs (my bill went up $3 without any notification). When I initially signed up, I paid the $100 for the gateway and it was made clear that it was mine to do with as I see fit in the event that I terminate service. However, I'm seeing reports that AT&T are refusing to activate previously-owned gateways. Anyone able to clarify?.

You first. You need to clarify the service type (legacy ADSL, or U-verse HSI) and modem make and model.

DSL modems aren't "activated", but some AT&T modems are not ATM and have proprietary security certificates which only work on AT&T accounts.

All good questions, Sir. I'm on uVerse, using a 2wire 3600HGV.

your bill prob went up $3 because of rate increase. you do own the modem and you shouldnt see any modem rental fee.

You have an AT&T IP-DSL modem; ADSL2+, PTM, 802.1x authentication. That modem will not work with any other provider, because most ADSL2+ uses ATM, and does not use 802.1x; the authentication being based on a hash of the modem serial number and some AT&T UI certificate.

Fair enough. I understand prices change. Some notice, by whatever means of communication, would have been appreciated. Basically, what I'm trying to find out is if I take my custom elsewhere, can some money be recovered.

Understood. It's no use with anything other than uVerse. That bit I get. Let's ask another way: If I sell it, can the buyer then call AT&T and say "I want uVerse internet, I have my own gateway" and get service? I'm seeing some reports suggesting that they won't do that.

That I do not know.

Prob not that way but if someone bought it on eBay, ordered new service and then used the "gently used" rg and it worked they could ship the new rg back for credit. But they won't let you setup new service without a modem

Btw. A 2wire 3600 is a Vdsl modem not an adsl2+ modem.
