CenturyLink wireless modem to wireless router connection

I have a new wireless modem from CenturyLink (the 3rd modem in 2 years) that has a very limited range. My previous modem wasn't wireless so I purchased a Netgear wireless router and that worked great. My new modem ain't cutting it in regard to signal range. Can I use my Netgear router with the new wireless modem? Will this further degrade the speed which already sucks.

Log into the new modem, disable the wireless, then put it in bridge mode. Connect the wireless router and use it as before.

Another option would be to use the Netgear router as an access point to extend the range of the new modem.
