Just running an inverter off the UPS battery and brick losses consumes a lot more energy than the MTA itself. You will need a huge UPS to see anywhere near the battery life of the tiny integrated battery even if UPS is doing nothing other than feeding MTA.

Charging a rental fee on something likely to be recovered many times over for MTA and punting on maintenance of same is like having your cake and eating it too - unfair and unprofessional in my opinion.

Or perhaps use a UPS that allows muting the "on battery power" audible alarm?

I agree. I own 2 different models of APC UPS units and both have a button on the front that you hit to display the various stats and say "hold to mute" I've not heard a single alarm in years if I didn't wish to. The fact the lights and AC are off in my room are all the alarm I need usually.

How long does the MTA battery last?

My CyberPower 1500VA 900W UPS supports a modem, router, switch & 1TB HDD providing 86 minutes.

You can permanently disable the alarms through APC's management software too.
