Re: Mayor Bloomberg: "Get used to it"

Many have moved here over the years, but it doesn't matter. We may be podunk center compared to NYC, but not where cameras etc. are concerned. We've had them forever. After all, guys, think of them as revenue!

they have these on intersections and on some blocks around town in granite city, IL. Not a terrible idea, and truthfully how much privacy can you really have in public? None really, nor should you expect it.

my brother in law is a dispatcher and I go and talk to him at his PD every now (not granite city, IL) and then. It came in handy recently in a drive by shooting where he works. Guy is going to have a hard time proving he wasn't the one with the gun.

Do you really want them to leave and move here?

Well there's not much chance of them moving to where I am. I'm hundreds of miles from any major city--on purpose

The only surveillance camera's around here are at stores wanting to catch shoplifters. Plus our soda's can be any size

When asked where I live, I have to tell people you can't get here from there. We also have any size soda or beer or just about anything else.

For security and safety surveillance and accurate information of events cameras are your friends. It's too bad that NYC is being used as a major US proving ground. I'd prefer Los Angeles or San Diego or just about any other major city to NYC.

I'd like to give a sincere from the heart honest explanation as to why I feel that way but it would be grossly misinterpreted as flaming or trolling. That's does no one any good.

"We're going to have more visibility and less privacy. I don't see how you stop that. And it's not a question of whether I think it's good or bad. I just don't see how you could stop that because we're going to have them."
Just because Mr. Mayor doesn't want to do anything to stop this doesn't mean the residents of his state won't. It may take a video from one of these cameras of someone in their bathroom accidentally getting posted on YT to galvanize the public sentiment.

the issue in such a case is that the city could ask why the person did not have blinds or curtains.

its NYC if a camera on a pole can see in your BR window, So can the people across the street, So can the kid with a zoom lense.

i remember one of the NY network morning shows doing a walk. They covered maybe 10 blocks. The guy that was escorting them said they had been captured on nearly 100 cameras while on that walk.

It's getting to be part of the norm. To be recorded. Sadly everyone bitches about privacy but yet:
Carries a smart phone, uses social media, uses a credit/debit card, uses cloud storage.

But then again, what is all the fuss?
People don't seem to care about the NSA snooping their electronic communications, but are going to fuss over cameras?

IMO the implications and relevant importance of your statement and what it represents to our world cannot be overstated. It is IMO more representative of the technology and privacy to our present and our future than NSA, drones, or other such more "ominous" sounding "threats" and changes.

In the First World there is no privacy. That is a historical state. The privacy is dropping too in the rest of the world by the time our now children become adults they will not understand what the concern or discussion of today was all about or even a big deal.

Unfortunately that is true.

When people have no interest in or understanding of fundamental philosophic ideas, especially the ones that resulted in the formation of their country, this will be the result. The average American has no clue nor do they want one. Some of us do...

What about false eyelashes? Wigs? Fake moustaches? Girdles? Lifts? Oversize sunglasses? Droopy hats? Face paint? A "Statue of Liberty" costume? Body paint?

You see where I'm going, yes?

None of the things that you mention can change the shape of your face. There is software out there that can measure the proportions of your face, its shape, and other unique things. Nothing but a good mask can effectively change these things.
Besides, I was just making a "matter of fact" statement.

Based on what was reported in the original article, Bloomberg doesn't appear to be saying a whole lot more than many of you here are saying: that you will have less privacy in the future, and there will be more surveillance of the population.

“You wait, in five years, the technology is getting better, they’ll be cameras everyplace . . . whether you like it or not,”

Does anyone here actually disagree with this prediction?

No, I guess not. But I'd like to add one proposal. Install cameras everywhere in his office(s) and broadcast live stream over the internet, 24/7. We want to know that our rulers are doing for our money...

He is a public servant and public needs to know what he's doing on our money. Seeing online how he picks up his nose is not security risk. It's experience of his ideas in action... It's especially useful for the elite (rulers) and should be seen as one of the major requirements to get the gob.
