It says "free 3G". Is that only for downloading e-books, or can I surf the web for free using 3G? What service does it run over? |

-j That is wi-fi not 3g. The kindles have partnerships with ATT and probably others to offer free 3g on devices that have it.
If you scroll down the amazon page a bit it explains it, and offers a coverage map. |

| reply to fartness I have the kindle keyboard 3G and not sure about free or not but know that while I was in the hospital for a week a few months ago, I could surf online. I am assuming used the hospital's connection but I could go to all my favorite forums including here. |

I'm only asking about the 3G. Not my home wifi, some random linksys router's wifi, or ATT hotspots which are wifi. I just want to know what the 3G will allow if there is no wifi hotspot available. |

lordglennothin but tater tots for dinnerPremium join:2001-06-17 Marietta, GA | you can use the built in browser to surf with 3g. it is possible to hack the kindle to allow tethering, but this violates your terms of service and amazon can and will brick your device if you do this. |

I opted to get the outgoing model (keyboard) over the newer one that had the canned 3G not that it's very fast but could be used as a last resort should something happen. -- It's NOT Ni-kon It's NE-KON!
