How many people can use a DSL line at once?

Assuming running a 25mbps/10mbps DSL connection for family of 4

Would 4 people simultaneously using bandwidth -- streaming videos (youtube and/or other stream sites), gaming, web browsing, etc cause the connection to be "laggy/choppy/slow"?

I have tried 3-4 people connected on a 15/1mbps connection and received a decent amount of lag, so I was wondering if 25/10mbps would provide smooth connection for all 4 people simultaneously.

Thanks!

I have a 5M service, my self, my wife and my 3 kids accessing the Internet Three laptops, 3 desktops, one netbook, an iPhone, an iPad2, and a few other sundry portable devices. No real problems in usage. A bit of a slowdown if we are all viewing video, but it's livable, plus I cheat a bit, as lord of my castle, my desktop has priority over all others.

I wish I had your warp speed connection.

Who are you getting a 25/10 DSL line from?

How is everyone connected?

I would first take a look at your router and network setup. Most home networks are not setup properly for heavy use.

As alluded to by Juggernaut the key would be QOS.

Check your current router, it might have QoS (quality of service) or Bandwidth limiting abilities, if it doesn't check out Tomato or ddwrt. Tomato by Shibby is my favorite for bandwidth limits.

The key is to make sure you upstream (upload, from your modem to the internet) never gets saturated... that keeps everything flowing smoothly.

All your weights are belong to BOFH! lol

Before I upgraded, I had 15/5 fios shared to 5 machines in my house, along with 2 directv boxes that used bandwidth for IPTV somtimes.. Never setup QOS cus I never had a congestion issue..

Now that I have 25/25, I really have no problems.. muahahah!1!!!

just make sure your router has enough cojones to do the job, and you`ll be fine.. (and no torrent freaks also, more for lawsuit issues than bandwidth)

As far as video goes... figure each HD steam will be 3-4mbs for 720p most are... 1080p more like 5-6mps... and SD as little as 1mbs or less.
The TCP/IP error check return traffic on the upload side will about 10% of that for each. Plus any actual uploading that may be going on, 10% of which will also be added to the DL side.
