RobNycPremium join:2002-03-06 New York, NY | Airline Questions I am traveling to Las Vegas in about 4 weeks, I waited too long (february) to book my flight and the Jetblue flight I was looking at went from $300 to $450 in a matter of a week. So I ended up booking the same flight 1 of my friends is going in via United Airlines but is making a stop in PHX, Paid $238. But I haven't bought my returning flight back to NYC/NJ, so looking at kayak wondering which airline should I go in.
I am trying to get an afternoon flight (12-2pm) that way I arrive in EWR, LGA or JFK before 11pm (work the next day). Seeing how tolls have gotten higher in NYC, I wouldn't mind flying to EWR (newark) and still the tolls will be cheaper than in NY Bridges.
Never flew in these and the cheapest flights are with these 3.
Virgin America US Airways United
Prices are above $400 but I flew in these before Delta AA Jetblue

 | Curious why you didn't buy a round trip ticket in the first place? Almost always much cheaper that way. |

If you're not into collecting flyer miles or if jetBlue is your preferred carrier, then I would suggest Virgin America as they are like jetBlue in that they try to be a bit more "cool and hip" than the regular airlines.
Also, if you're connecting via Phoenix on United then at least one leg of your flight (Phoenix - Las Vegas for certain) is going to actually be flown by US Airways. I'm just pointing that out in case you don't do much flying and perhaps having looked at your ticket closely.
Otherwise, have you priced Southwest on this route? They don't list prices on Kayak but they tend to not be very competitive on long, cross country flights and have limited flights into Newark and LaGuardia. -- This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper. |

 | reply to RobNyc No question. I go out of my way to fly them. ALL their planes have WiFi (though it costs extra), 120v power between the seats, and an in-seat entertainment system (free satellite TV and music, paid on-demand movies).

Sorry, my question is just which airline should I fly with coming back from LV to NJ/NYC Virgin, US Airways or United, I think I saw a delta flight or AA under $400.
I'm just basically trying to find a flight under $350-400 with the shortest flight duration departing 12pm-2pm even with 1 stop.
Yes my flight is on US Airways JFK to PHX then PHX to LV, lay over is under 50mins. But I did a google search US Airways vs United and looks like US Airways has more bad reviews than United.
Should I take a chance by waiting last minute ? (As I am already) to book my returning flight. I just looked at Southwest and their prices aren't any better than what I'm seeing on Kayak for other airlines, and all southwest flights have layover |

algPassionately apatheticPremium join:2001-04-10 Houston, TX kudos:3 | reply to RobNyc If you can get a price and schedule on Virgin America that you are comfortable with then I would book now. A lot of cheap tickets require a 21 day advance purchase; inside of that window you run the potential of paying some crazy prices as one way, short notice travel tends to be big with business travelers that can charge any price to their expense accounts.
Just as an aside regarding Newark: have you ever taken NJT out to the airport from Manhattan? I visit New York semi regularly via Newark and NJT makes the trip into the city quite cheap, even if it's just to take a cab out of Penn Station.

I fly only on one way tickets and I've never been subjected to any additional security checks. -- This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper. |

I found a Southwest Flight for $388 1:15pm departs arrives 10:30pm (LV to EWR), but also found a VirginAmerica for $355 2:3pm departs arrives 10:30pm (LV to JFK). I think I'm gonna go with the VirginAmerica (cheaper and shorter duration)
Btw, yes I've heard how convenient it is to travel via train from Newark airport. Hopefully my dad picks me up at JFK =) |

| reply to RobNyc Last time I flew (a couple of years ago), I took Virgin America from Las Vegas to San Fran and back. It was very enjoyable, the seats were a bit wider and leather. The crew had a very sort of 'chill' vibe about them. Next time I fly (hopefully to Vegas soon), I will try and take VA, assuming their price isn't totally out of the ballpark. -- Roadkill 2015 |

I generally prefer to fly WN but one time I had to take a short-notice hop from CLE to SDF and got the dreaded SSSS on a one-way ticket. What a complete waste of resources, I was one of 5 passengers on a tiny Q200 and there's absolutely nothing between those two cities to crash a plane in to anyway. That was the last time I flew Continental. |

On second thought it's not accurate to say that I *only* fly one way as that is specific to my travel on Southwest. On United I purchase RT tickets.
Out of curiosity, was your SSSS experience a while back? I just haven't heard of it happening much lately, and at worse people get something along the lines of "This is not a boarding pass, please see agent" when they try to check in online but that's not the same as the SSSS. -- This is the way the world ends Not with a bang but a whimper. |

Yeah, it was definitely late 2009, maybe early 2010. I bought the ticket online. If i recall correctly, when I tried to print the boarding pass the site kept telling me the confirmation number was not found. |

RobNycPremium join:2002-03-06 New York, NY | reply to RobNyc Hey guys, should I let Virgin America assign me a seat when I check-in since no available seats are showing for me to select or should I just buy the $20 main cabin express seat ? There's one available in row 7 |

I would wait, they'll get you a seat maybe even one of those premium seats. -- ~Sly

Since I'm landing pretty late and im bringing a carry-on bag I wouldn't mind paying $20 for the front seat thats currently available next to the exit.
But I do remember coming back from Dominican Republic in the summer time, I had a so so seat and delta upgraded me for free to first-class when I checked-in ahh that was nice |
