[TWC] Need new modem

I just moved into my new house and had the cable hooked up. I got the 30/5 package and it rocks. They gave me a beat up SBG 6580. The one thing I hate about it is it has a built on router/firewall. I found info here to turn it off so I can use my own router.
I would like to buy my own modem. What modem would you guys recommend that doesn't have a built in router/firewall?

The Motorola SB6141 is a very good option (I recommend the white retail packaged model so you can get the latest firmware).

The Motorola 6180... can be found on Amazon.com.. »www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/···ion=used

[I bought one from 'Zumbee' on Amazon marketplace... for about $46-47 delivered. ]
-From the comments, it can be added to TWC even though it is not listed as officially supported. Also cheaper than the SB6141 as well.

SB6141: »www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?···=+SB6141

It is a 8 channel downstream and 4 channel upstream channel bonding as well.

They'll downgrade you (happened to me).

Thanks peeps.
Do I need to call for them to activate the new modem?

Step 4: Activate your modem.
A. Locate the Cable Modem ID (MAC address) for your new modem, usually found on the bottom of the modem.

B. Call TWC or chat online with an agent to activate your new modem:

• Call TWC (800-TWCable) to reach an agent

• Chat with an agent – select option ‘Buy or Lease your Modem’.

• You will need to provide the agent with the Cable Modem ID (MAC address) for the new modem.

C. The agent will activate the new modem on your account.

D. If you are a new customer without a leased modem from TWC, this is your last step!

E. If you are an existing customer with a leased modem, please continue to Step 5 to return your existing modem. Please note: Failure to return your leased modem and power cord may result in additional equipment charges and continuing monthly Internet Modem Lease charges.

i'm also saving up to buy a Motorola SB6141 as it seems to have the best specs, track record, and like you said - no router or wifi that most of us prefer in a separate device. i have both the white and black one set on camel-watch so if their is a temporary price break, i will finally pounce.

Zoom 5341J is another good option if you want to spend a bit less and don't care so much about the onboard status info (as I believe it offers less than the Moto). It's got 8 down / 4 up channels as well, no unnecessary routing features. I have been using one for about 6 months.

even though the zoom was later added to TWC modem list, it may lack IPv6 and faster euro docsis speed capability, thus the 6141 remains the better choice - if you want to buy more future proofing now.

1 edit

DOCSIS 3 requires IPv6 capability and Comcast has the 5341J running IPv6. Euro DOCSIS (8Mhz downstream channels) won't happen in North America, so unless the OP is planning on moving to Europe this is a non issue.

[edit] BTW the chipset in the 5341J does support EuroDOCSIS.

of course it's a non issue - i simply feel more comfortable investing in hardware with potential i may never need... leaves more overhead for whatever may come especially now that cable wants to maximize it's coax build capability in order to compete with fiber. also the fact that a model is also used in europe means it may be around and supported a lot longer... at least it seems that way to me
