Some very useful features. | reply to Nightfall said by Nightfall:This right here, but of course there are times when I find being away from a computer can be difficult. Here in about a month I am going to be at an all-inclusive resort in Jamaica for 8 days. From a techie perspective, I am sure it will be a pain not being plugged in very much, but I am sure I will love sitting at poolside, drinking margaritas, and relaxing.
I am addicted to computers though. They really are what I love doing. Thats when you bring your android tablet and vnc into your network and you can still play .
| | reply to Nightfall said by Nightfall:I have been in the IT field for about 18 years. In all that time, from my start as a helpdesk person in college all the way up to a Director of IT today, I have always enjoyed my work. Working in a technical field was really the best choice for me.
Even when I worked for a company with a poor culture, that didn't drag me down. I always had a positive attitude and a hard work ethic. Even through my share of mistakes that I have made, I have always rebounded and come back stronger. My attitude has never changed when it comes to IT.
Working with people is very satisfying. Yes, even the "DEU's" everyone here talks about (Dumb End Users), I enjoy helping them out. I understand that some users are not going to be a technically inclined as I am, and I am ok with that. With the training programs I have developed at the places I have worked, I have really brought the overall technical abilities of the employees up. This has resulted in less tickets as a result.
Overall, the highly technical and infrastructure pieces are exciting to me. We are in the process of developing a plan to migrate to the new VMWare, purchase new servers, and add a couple new Cisco switches. When it comes to infrastructure planning and implementation, I have done a lot in my career and these things are very exciting to work on. I haven't lost my technical chops either as I still routinely work on the servers and network.
When I read about people looking forward to the weekend or hating their jobs, I understand it, but that isn't me. Everyday I come into work, this is enjoyable to me. Would I rather be home playing Far Cry 3 at times, oh yes. At the same time though, I really enjoy my time at work as well. The day goes by so fast and I feel like I get a lot done.
Is there anyone else out there that is passionate about their job? Do you enjoy what you do? I really can't be the only one here with a very positive outlook on my job. Maybe I am brain damaged or something. I spent 6 years in the military doing something I hated, then moved over to the web hosting industry as a system admin after I got out. Been at it for almost 3 years now and I really love it. Working from home, full insurance coverage, 401k, etc. is pretty much just a dream come true.
I started out in support and moved up to a manager in 6 months at my current company. 6 months after that I moved to the position I hold now, which basically puts me in charge of handling emergency issues during my shift.
I'm really happy with where I am, and as my company continues to grow, more and more opportunities are always becoming available, so I hope to continue to move up the chain over time.
With that being said, there's a lot of people that aren't very passionate about their jobs at my company and I can tell they just go through the motions. In the time i've been at the company there's people whom were level 1 techs before I got there and are still level 1 techs to this day. No ambition or motivation whatsoever. Those are the kind of people I can't stand. Our entire support department annoys me at the moment because so many of the admins there screw up on a regular basis.
Last year I had to fix the home directory 3 times on servers because L2's with root access somehow managed to mess up the permissions. Luckily, one time they only chowned the home folder itself, but the other two times they chown'd every other users folder and their files to that of a single user (and this was two different people).
Mistakes happen, sure, but some of these guys really don't deserve root access when they're doing stuff like this without checking their scripts / one-liners first. If I was their boss I'd probably strip them of root access and demote them after doing something like that.
So, while I love my job, I do have qualms with certain co-workers. The thing I've learned over time, though, is that no matter where you go you're going to have quirks and people you don't get along with, so I don't let it bother me too much. I just make sure their managers know about it every time they mess up.
