 | Brown ice!!! LOL... Frigidaire Ice ruster |
Well, I went to make some crushed ice from the fridge and eeeewwww! Brown ice!
Closer inspection tells me that fridge needs a new icebox maker. Found the part ($110) on RepairParts site.
Here is picture to share. (I don't get why they couldn't spend the extra $5 for stainless steel as the fridge was $1999 new 12 years ago...really??? junk plated metal for food-grade surface only to rust...)

 | Why is your freezer getting warm enough to have liquid water sitting around?
That aside, it did take 12 years for it to rust. It's probably well past 'design' lifetime.

Every penny they can cut from the cost of manufacturing the product leads to an increase in profits.
2) Planned obsolescence. If they made a high quality product that lasts almost forever, eventually appliance sales would decline, and that is not good for the manufacturer's bottom line.
It's the sad truth about today's economy. Very few things are "built to last" anymore, unless you're willing to pay 10x the price. |

 | reply to cableties said by cableties:Found the part ($110) on RepairParts site. If you haven't already ordered the part, Amazon sells the same thing. I had to replace ours about 6 months ago and found out they're a standardized thing from what I can tell. »www.amazon.com/Supco-RIM277-Frig···ce+maker |

 | reply to mackey No standing water in it. Perhaps the pH in the water contributed to this. But like ya said, 12 years... not so bad. But yes, I do have expectations when an appliance costs several thousand dollars to not have a failure like this. A toaster, ok. But a side-by-side that is stainless on the outside...call it 'irony'. -- Splat |

Appliance manufacturers often charge a huge premium for stainless (on the outside) appliances. But what you typically get is just a thin sheet of low grade stainless on the outside, if you're lucky. Sometimes it's just plated steel. Nothing remotely worth the money they ask for it.
Unfortunately, in this case, high price does not mean quality. People are willing to pay huge prices just for better looks/aesthetics of "stainless steel", that's the problem. |

davidgGood Bye My FriendPremium,MVM join:2002-06-15 none | my "stainless steel" fridge, range, venthood and dishwasher all have magnets stuck to the "stainless". so either they have a real thin sheet of stainless, or it is just brushed steel with an antioxidation coating. but hey, this was a starter set we bought for 1900.00 for all 4 when we first got the house since appliances were not part of the deal. -- Lack of Preparation on YOUR Part does NOT Constitute an Emergency on Mine! |
