[Connectivity] Something is messed up on my connection

Started having issues with my VPN to work. Did some tests, and something is funky with my upstream. Ran the VisualWare quality test, and got this. I bolded some of the issues. I think receive in this case means what they are getting. I have posted in the Direct forum to see what is going on.

For reference. This is after about 90 minutes uptime since the last reboot.

It's hard to say when it started, although it was probably overnight or early this morning.

I had 16-days uptime before I started having problems, and hadn't had any problems until this morning.

I'm interested to hear what they say. Although I don't have any issues, while helping a friend troubleshoot his speeds, I was looking through my modem logs to see what config file I had. What I noticed was that there is no config file being loaded, unless I am missing it. My log is nearly identical to yours.

*edit
nm. I found another post after a couple hours of searching that states the config file is hidden on a SB6120 and SB6121. Hope your problem clears up.

Try clicking on the "Reset All Defaults" and then the "Restart Cable Modem" buttons in the User Interface. The name of the config file *may* then show up among the error log entries.

Haven't heard from the direct forum yet. It's still somewhat acting up today. Sometimes it's OK, then it's glitchy again.

On the Motorola's, you only see the config file after a firmware update. My log is short because I had a done a reset and reboot to see if it would clear up the issue.

If I hear nothing, I may buy a Zoom over the weekend and see if that helps, given some of the issues the SB's have with bonded upstream.

Are you using more than one tool to verify this?

This is the only one that I know of that gives statistics like that. Also, copying files to work through my VPN are horribly glitchy and slow. Downloading is fine. I ran off of my "speedy" (1.5/0.384) DSL backup connection today for work.

Still haven't heard from Direct forum. I was hoping to see if I could get the uSNR readings.

Why not call and ask for the uSNR? It shouldn't take too long.

Can a typical phone rep be trusted to give the right numbers and to not just make something up ??

If you "copy files" anywhere else, do you experience the same issues?

Can the typical DSLR forum user be trusted to give good advice?

No, but it's the only avenue you have sometimes.

I basically only do large copies though the VPN. That said, when I run speed tests, you can see the upstream test being all over the place, and I can see the network connection light on my router not blinking continuously for the computer's connection.

I have also seen this on 3 different computers, and rebooted the router.

Take the router out and go directly off the modem would be a good first step.

You need to find a problem non-VPN related as well, because there are dozens of reasons your VPN would be behaving that way. What does ShaperProbe say when run on your connection?

The issues tends to come and go a bit. I'm wondering if heat may be an issue, as these are some of the first warm days in awhile. It's marginally OK in the morning, but gets worse in the afternoon. As far as the VPN, my backup DSL had no issues with copying, beyond the normal slowness. I get a consistent 35KB/sec, which is about right for 384Kb DSL (unlike cable, DSL rates are raw and your actual rates a bit lower due to overhead.)

It hasn't really been hot to the point heat will be an issue, and if it was you would see a big swing in SNR and signal levels, and your connection beyond your VPN would be affected.

Please run that first test again without your router and see what happens.

Can you run the visualware ROUTE test? to see if it points to any specific hop.

ROUTE test to where? By default, for my address (last two numbers of IP cut off for security).

Re: [Connectivity] Something is messed up on my connection

at visualware »myspeed.visualware.com/servers/n···ion=USA: Chicago, Illinois&cm=no&ver=9&map=namerica&codec=speedstd&codectext=Standard View Socket&width=600&provtext=Visualware&provlink=http://www.visualware.com&width=600
click ROUTE on the right hand side, then Start at the top.

This is a "looking glass" type app, the route from the VW server to you.
My thought was you could run it direct and again through the VPN to see what happens.

Also most of the VW test support either a socket test or HTTP test the HTTP test has lower throughput but much greater stability

Re: [Connectivity] Something is messed up on my connection

It almost seems as if whatever address I use, it eventually just says 2 hops. I think this test measures from their servers to the selected address. From the table, it usually lists two of their servers, and one of the ISP links (Comcast for my address, RoadRunner for my main VPN).

So far, still nothing from Direct. I made a new post with a more direct request.

I did do a few things over the weekend. I loosened/tightened all of the RF connection, and unplugged/replugged all of the network cables. I could stream video from my computer to my WDTV Live with no issues, so I think it's either the WAN connection, modem, or something further upstream.

It's a bit better today so far, and I put the work computer back on it for awhile to see what happens. It is cooler today (30's instead of 50's). I guess it's remotely possible some upstream amp is getting flaky.

Finally heard from Direct forum. Everything looks good, which is no surprise as I have had no issues for several days.

On a side note, I've noticed my 6120 has not logged that silly 'DHCP Renew' message, even though it's been up for 7 days now. Normally, it would be posted every 3.5 days. Maybe the reset to defaults and reboot cleared something?

Unfortunately, this issue has come back again today. Signals are more or less the same.

Tried calling Comcast, got an Indian call center. Just a script kiddie with rebooting everything, etc... I still have no idea what my upstream SNR may be. I tried another direct forum post, but if it's like before, it'll be days before somebody gives me an answer, and may fix itself by then.

I'm also starting to see occasional T3's logged.

Latest test. It sometimes passes OK (shows about 26.6/5.6), then other times has major issues.

Take record of your modem levels and events when you get the different test results. Make sure you are testing directly off the modem and not using a router.
