Housing authority? Home break-in

I always knew the house next door was a rental property. Never met the landlord. Tenents weren't great but I've had worse neighbors in the past by far.

About two or three weeks ago, I saw a u-haul truck in the mud on their lawn. Then there was a lot of garbage by the curb and the garbage can sat there after trash was picked up... all week. I figured they moved out.

Today I see two guys boarding up the house. I asked what's going on? They said the housing authority owns the house and the tenants were paying $50 a month and were evicted for not paying their rent. Once they left, the house was broken into sometime between the time they left and now. The side porch window was busted, then someone climbed through and busted a door window and got in. They said no copper was taken but that they'll probably be back.

I don't live in "the hood". This neighborhood isn't the best but isn't the worst. It's in the city but 2/10th of a mile from the suburbs, not that it makes a difference. My car was broken into last year. Cops were useless and didn't even want to come out and take a report. Now this just pisses me off. Pretty sure I heard a noise last night around 2AM that was loud which woke me up. Likely was their house being broken into.

Any chance a citizen can buy a house from the housing authority and then rent it out? Do they sell the houses or just rent them?

I'm getting the urge to re-enact a certain scene from "Step Brothers" but it probably won't make a difference to people on a gubmint waiting list funded by my tax dollars.

I thought housing authority was section 8, where a landlord owns the property and section 8 re-imburses some or most of the rent. In this case, "the housing authority" seems to be the city that owns all these properties. Shit, I'd rather buy it and rent it out to someone of my choosing.

Would you really want to buy a house that you know has been broken into at least once and possibly more? The "housing authority" is a generic term which could be quite a few things.

Section 8 is government assistance. I have a Section 8 tenant in one of my units. The government sends me a check for around 80% of the rent and the tenant picks up the rest.

Maybe they meant it owned by the Public Housing Agency (PHA). It doesn't sound very typical though. If the place is for sale it would be a public auction or open bid format so whoever offers the most wins. It's not like a private place where you make an offer and they accept and sell to you. Everyone gets a shot to buy the place if that's an option.

The housing authority in certain Florida cities pick up tax liens and the like and actually own the house and rent it out. I don't know where you're at but it is very possible that they own it. Give them a call and ask them. I agree that if you can get it cheap you should buy it and rent it out.

but how much would it cost to repair the place? What all damage was done to it?

The guys boarding up the windows said the housing authority's upkeep of homes makes them the best in the neighborhood. He said one of my other neighbors was in a housing authority house too, and by the way they kept the grass and the house, I thought they owned it for 40 years. It's immaculate. This house next door that was broken into, they weren't too keen on keeping the place looking great, but it was not a dump by any means either. The tenants were responsible for making it look how it did. If they cared, it would have been top pick too. The guys boarding the place up said all it needs is a coat of paint and some nicer cabinets (and some new glass work courtesy of said burglar).

I'm sure they all had under the table jobs too... wouldn't want that income making their $50 housing more expensive or not eligable, now would they?
