 | [TWC] Questions about Los Angeles cable internet quality I have been thinking of switching to TWC lately from ATT DSL but have been wondering about a few things.
How reliable is it? (connection drops/network trouble etc.)
How consistent are the speeds during peak times? (I plan on getting the 15/1 tier and have read horror stories about cable connections hitting dial up speeds during peak times)
What's the ping like? (I play some online games sometimes, not that important but would like to at least not have to deal with worse ping than DSL if possible)
Is customer support as bad as I've heard it is? (Is it worse than ATT?)
How much will internet only cost per month after a year for standard tier? (I've seen ranges from $40-$59)
We have never had cable of any kind, Will they have to drill a hole in my beautiful wall??
I hardly use Wi-Fi except for when family/friends need to use their iphone/laptop to google/watch youtube vids, I also plan on turning an old PC into a media server (wired connection not wireless) for my network. Would this router be enough or would I need something beefier? »www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-RangeMax-···r_sims_t
(I also plan on buying a Motorola SB6121 SURFboard modem)
Thanks for helping me out. |

audia5 join:2012-01-02 united state | I made the switch to TWC this January from Verizon DSL and its pretty reliable I've never seen a drop in service. The only time I had trouble was when the internet was installed. The modem wouldn't provision and got below average download speed but I resolved all this by using twitter and tweeting Time Warner it was fixed in about 2 hours. I have the 15/1 internet and I always manage to hit 14.76/ 1.22 Mbps ping ranges from 20-55 ms (6:00 am - 3:00 pm) day time , at peak hours I manage to get 14.25/ 1.22 Mbps pin 56 ms - 65 ms. Customer service is okay, it's better to deal with them via twitter. I didn't have any holes drilled, as my house already had coaxial RG-6 cable ran through the house when I had directv and they used those existing cables. I pay $33.49 with tax included. ($29.99 15/ 1 Standard Internet) and $3.50 Modem only lease fee for 12 months, after I think it's $49.95 but the rep told me to call after 12 months to get another promo of equal price. I use an Arris CM820A modem and an Apple AirPort Express with a Linksys router, and it flies. . |

What's the ping like? (I play some online games sometimes, not that important but would like to at least not have to deal with worse ping than DSL if possible) On average I'd say it's gone down for about half a day every 2 years. Only other hiccup I've seen is it went down for a few minutes at 3 am when they turned up 8-channel channel bonding.
No peak time issues here. This is highly dependent on your area though. With the move to DOCSIS 3 and channel bonding, peak time slowdowns should no longer be an issue.
Ping times are going to vary depending on the destination. AT&T might have better routing to some places (and thus a better ping time) while TWC might be better to another. On average it seems to be about the same as Fastpath DSL and will probably be slightly faster then Interleaved DSL.

(I also plan on buying a Motorola SB6121 SURFboard modem) Don't know, I go out of my way to calling either companies' support lines.
Currently TWC's basic 15/1 package is $52.99 here in the LA area.
Yes, they'll drill holes and most likely tack the cable along the outside of your house/apartment. If you want it done neat you'll need to have an electrician (or someone who knows how to fish cable) wire your place up before calling TWC out.
Maybe, maybe not. I haven't used that router, but it'll most likely be fine for wired connections at least.
If you can, get the 6141 instead - it bonds 8 channels instead of 4 thereby helping with any potential peak time slowdowns.

ku8 join:2001-08-08 Ridgewood, NJ | reply to Confuzzle I'm from the 213 area and have been with TWC for about a year and a half. My experiences, especially recently, have not been good. BTW, I have the "regular"? plan, getting about 8mbps/1mbps when I am not having connection issues.
Connection would drop once every week or two, though generally it has been late at night (between 11pm-3am).
Speeds during peak time, at least in the last 6 months or so, have been horrible. Streaming video is not an option, let alone gaming or anything of that nature.
Ping, when the connection is working, is pretty good, but nothing spectacular. As mentioned above, during peak hours or when the internet is slow, I found it to be unplayable.
Customer support has not been too terrible so far, but I am about to contact them some more to get them to try to remedy these issues.
I am no longer on a contract and pay ~$55/mo.
(I will defer on the wall, router, and modem question. |
