is Cv Switching to MPEG 4 anytime soon?

I was woundering if CV is switching to MPEG 4 anytime soon like fios is. I have the older SA boxes which only support mpeg 2, but work better from what I hear than the samsung boxes, should I upgrade now or wait.

if the entire infrastructure was changed to MPEG4, there would certainly be much more room for channels.
its just a dream though.

Since people rather joke then actually answer you I will answer you. Cablevision will not change to mpeg 4 anytime soon since that would take a major backend change. I would think they would change to all ip based and go mpeg 4 at the same time but cablevision has bigger things to work on first

I think that the MPEG2 support is microcode not hardware support. In that case, step 1 to providing MPEG4 support would be a microcode push to add MPEG4 in addition to the current MPEG2. In addition there would need to be some type of probing when you switch channels to verify that you have the MPEG4 supporting microcode level. That would allow the Headend to feed you with either the MPEG2 or MPEG4 feed.

Things would be much simpler if in lieu of having separate TV Channels, the boxes were using IPv6 Multicasting and streaming. That would allow a single session per channel (two sessions if you wanted both MPEG2 and MPEG4 feeds). Something like this is already used for DVR+ and OnDemand although each box gets its own feed. For shows that are run on a schedule, you only need one IP stream (although going IPv6 Multicast is less bandwidth intensive since unless someone on your node is watching a channel, there is no session on that node to watch unlike IPv4-multicast where each viewer gets their own private session to the server which uses more bandwidth).

there is a hardware component to MPEG4 and a box does have to have hardware that can support it to be able to view channels that are delivered in MPEG4. I don't think it is a microcode issue where you just change the code it has something to do with the processing of the hardware that determines if it is supported or not. I know for a fact all of the Scientific Atlanta boxes that Cablevision has deployed DO NOT SUPPORT MPEG4! Only the Samsung boxes.

I believe DVR plus uses QAM based delivery and not IP video delivery to box just like VOD is delivered.
