[CFL] Upgraded to Lightning - Wireless Still at Turbo Speed

I upgraded to Lightning and had a tech out that did a modem swap. My wife and I have the same laptop, and hers is getting Lightning speed both hard wired and wireless. However, my laptop with the same n card is only getting lightning speed hardwired.

The only difference is I am running Linux, but I have another Windows 7 laptop and it is also only getting in the 20's on Download.

Running the BHN Speedtest hardwired I get 66.81 Down and 5.64 Up

Wireless I am getting 25.59 Down and 5.68 up

What could be blocking the speed?

Even the tech was baffled

Thanks,
Ira

Depending on the wireless conditions and the wireless devices in your home thats about right. You will NOT see the speeds for wireless that you do for wired.

However, my wife's computer is seeing wireless speeds in the 60's

That was the reason for the question. How could one computer that is exactly alike get wireless speeds that are in the 60's and the other one get 26. They are in the same room.

sounds like you have a G card and she has an N card in hers

Nope, they both have N cards

That doesn't mean that both devices are connecting via N. You may have to force the issue and there may be an issue with the device itself. This is unfortunately the nature of wireless devices. If speed matters...wire it.

that sounds like the exact symptom of a G card. Maybe BHNtech is right with it not connecting via N? Im not sure how you would check that though

I dont know about other routers, but mine has a screen to show wireless connection speed for each device. Also you can get that displayed in windows , heres a link to show how:

There could be many things going on. For the one where it is the same computer but you are using Linux it might be something related to the drivers in use under Linux. Or perhaps something like a power saving mode is getting activated. I would research more there by checking the hardware, driver in use, and the kernel/operating system in use.

in a pinch, 'lspci -v' and/or 'lsusb -v' as root should give some information when ran from the terminal. Where to go from there depends on what you have.

It could also be a compatibility issue between the way the linux wireless card driver auto negotiates with your router. As I think already mentioned you might try looking for an option to force the use of N to try to troubleshoot.

Wireless is much better under linux than in the past but sometimes there are still some bugs especially on certain hardware. That the other laptop can't connect at the high speeds either may be a coincidence and for some other reason. Related or not.

Something you might try: Download an opensuse or Ubuntu live CD (where you can run the OS without installing the entire OS itself - be careful if you go this route NOT to overwrite the existing windows install) and run it on her laptop and see if she can still connect at high speeds. Maybe do the same with yours as well while you are at it. This could help to narrow it down and eliminate possibilities.

Soon (like a few days) I will be posting an in depth thread on wireless speeds and device expectations detailing all of the goods, bads and uglies.
