Disney (Florida): Recommendations / Opinions / Conjecture

My wife and I (and two kids) are going to Disney in Florida in October 2014. We are flying, staying two weeks, already picked our hotel (Disney Port Orleans - Riverside) though nothing is set in stone.

We reviewed many disney & non-disney hotels and used Mousesavers for recommendations as well. We decided against the dining plan and will likely be shipping down some dry food to eat in the hotel room to save on expenses.

I have never been there and my wife was there once as a child. I am looking for thoughts, opinions, recommendations from those who have been there.

Looking for thoughts, opinions, recommendations, things to be aware of, things to watch out for, etc, from those who have been there. Feel free to comment on anything related to the trip.

Appreciate any feedback !

As an adult I try to avoid Disney. Personally I like Epcot much better and like Sea World best of all. Sea World is far less crowded and I think there is more to see there. Course, the kids may "need" to go to Disney as it's certainly aimed at young children.

As of right now we plan to hit the disney parks (10 days) including the water parks depending on the weather. We do intend to go to Seaworld & Busch Gardens.

Thanks for the input. I agree - I could probably take or leave the actual Disney part of it. I look forward to Busch and some of the more adventurous things. We have little for amusements up here except Valleyfair which became "meh" about 10 years ago. My daughter will be 6 when we go, I can't wait to be a part of it for/with her though

We'd like to hit Universal but we are only staying 14 nights and the first "day" will be flying in. Unsure yet whether we will do anything the first day. We fully expect Disney alone will take up 10 days and we expect there will be at least one day of not going anywhere.

Legoland has not been brought up at all yet.

I'd agree but not very interesting for young kids, though great for middle and high school level.

Personally I have preferred Universal since it was built to Disney...plus Disney doesn't change a lot and have seen most of it a couple of times. Of the few times I have been to Universal there has always been new stuff.

Well, the first time I went to Disney World, my wife dragged me kicking and screaming. But, I loved it! I have been back once since then, and I loved it even more. Yes, Epcot is my favorite part, but the main part is a lot of fun, too. Also, the safari part.

The only thing I don't really care for is all the walking. But you sure do sleep well at night.

That sounds like a lot of time to me . I'm 68 and we've been there at least 10 times. Just wife and I, and with son, and with entire school music program (about 400 kids, 2 chartered jets)

Depends on how old your kids are.

I get free Disney tickets each year and I still go to Universal. If I were you I'd at least try one day at Universal. You can do both parks in one day if you arrive when they open and plan your rides out. Everything Potter will be a line though.

Wow you are planning WAY out. I haven't been there in over 2 decades but it was a lot of fun.

If you have never been to Florida, its extremely humid and the heat index is killer, so make sure to drink plenty of fluids and get of the sun regularly. If your kids are very young (5-?), I would recommend having planned breaks to go indoors to make sure they don't overheat.

Hope you have a good time at Disney World.

Depends on the kid - I would have loved it when I was a kid.

You picked a great time of year to go. I went once as a kid and a few years ago for a honey moon. The lineups will be short or reasonable.

All of the Disney parks are great. Epcot is a bit more multi-cultural focused and less rides so it would depend on the attention span of your kids. Sea World was awesome.

One surprise we did have is the few weeks leading up to Halloween universal studios does a special Halloween nights. They close one half of the park for a few hours and when you return it's been transformed into a Halloween wonder world. All the locals come out and the place was an absolute zoo. The most popular rides had huge lineups. Jaws didn't have much of a line-up... but it was actually much much cooler at night than during day. If you make it to the Halloween event it is definitely worth going for the atmosphere and the many shows they run in the mini stadiums (but not likely many rides).

Universal is doable in a day. You could probably spend 2. They also have the new harry potter section. I haven't been but it may be a must if your kids are into that.

Actually no..
Disney was built so ADULTS could enjoy a safe day at an amusement park with their children. Read up on the history of Disney...

How much you enjoy Disney has all to do with your perspective on what the park is, if you think it is just for kids, then that is all you will see, if you open your eyes and take a step back so to speak, you will see that there is much more for adults to enjoy than there is for children.

I've been to both several times and unless you have free tickets or plan to spend several days at Universal, it will be VERY expensive. I spent nearly $500 for three adults to enter the park for ONE day...

Disney just did a MAJOR expansion at the Magic Kingdom park.
