Are you using more than one tool to verify this?

This is the only one that I know of that gives statistics like that. Also, copying files to work through my VPN are horribly glitchy and slow. Downloading is fine. I ran off of my "speedy" (1.5/0.384) DSL backup connection today for work.

Still haven't heard from Direct forum. I was hoping to see if I could get the uSNR readings.

Why not call and ask for the uSNR? It shouldn't take too long.

Can a typical phone rep be trusted to give the right numbers and to not just make something up ??

If you "copy files" anywhere else, do you experience the same issues?

Can the typical DSLR forum user be trusted to give good advice?

No, but it's the only avenue you have sometimes.

I basically only do large copies though the VPN. That said, when I run speed tests, you can see the upstream test being all over the place, and I can see the network connection light on my router not blinking continuously for the computer's connection.

I have also seen this on 3 different computers, and rebooted the router.

Take the router out and go directly off the modem would be a good first step.

You need to find a problem non-VPN related as well, because there are dozens of reasons your VPN would be behaving that way. What does ShaperProbe say when run on your connection?

The issues tends to come and go a bit. I'm wondering if heat may be an issue, as these are some of the first warm days in awhile. It's marginally OK in the morning, but gets worse in the afternoon. As far as the VPN, my backup DSL had no issues with copying, beyond the normal slowness. I get a consistent 35KB/sec, which is about right for 384Kb DSL (unlike cable, DSL rates are raw and your actual rates a bit lower due to overhead.)

It hasn't really been hot to the point heat will be an issue, and if it was you would see a big swing in SNR and signal levels, and your connection beyond your VPN would be affected.

Please run that first test again without your router and see what happens.

Can you run the visualware ROUTE test? to see if it points to any specific hop.

ROUTE test to where? By default, for my address (last two numbers of IP cut off for security).

Re: [Connectivity] Something is messed up on my connection

at visualware »myspeed.visualware.com/s ··· ion=USA: Chicago, Illinois&cm=no&ver=9&map=namerica&codec=speedstd&codectext=Standard View Socket&width=600&provtext=Visualware&provlink=http://www.visualware.com&width=600
click ROUTE on the right hand side, then Start at the top.

This is a "looking glass" type app, the route from the VW server to you.
My thought was you could run it direct and again through the VPN to see what happens.

Also most of the VW test support either a socket test or HTTP test the HTTP test has lower throughput but much greater stability

It almost seems as if whatever address I use, it eventually just says 2 hops. I think this test measures from their servers to the selected address. From the table, it usually lists two of their servers, and one of the ISP links (Comcast for my address, RoadRunner for my main VPN).
