Re: [OOL] Upgraded to Boost Plus and don't see any benefits* said by kickass69:Because of what I said previously about 'trusting' a cloud provider and its security practices. Needing an internet connection to access said backup is never a good idea when a disaster strikes. Local offsite backups are always a better solution in my view. Backups that are current is a better solution in my view, and the only way I know of maintaining offsite backups that are current is using cloud backup. You don't have to trust a service provider - you can run your own offsite service. And using just cloud backup is a nice simplification - both your "normal" and "disaster" data recovery are the same.
Carbonite is one backup service that addresses each of the objections raised in this thread - I'm sure others do as well.
1. Encrypted on your computer. All the backup service has is your encrypted files, so if someone hacks them all they get is your encrypted files. Maybe they can learn something from the file names, but there may be a way to address that as well. 2. Courier service to restore files. In case of a disaster, your backup can be delivered to your location via courier.
Another way would be to make your own cloud backup to another location. Crashplan is software that will allow you to do this. You can connect the locations any way your want - for example private network or internet/VPN. I know one company that leases dark fiber between locations and has a 60Gigabit connection used for connectivity and backups. For restore you could move the backup server to a LAN connection if the connection between locations is not fast enough.
There are several challenges with a backup made locally and courriered offsite. This is the way we used to do it before fast enough data connections were available/affordable. 1. Requires manual procedures, which are subject to failure. 2. Usually involves full backups (weekly or monthly) and daily incrementals. Restoring is a long process of recoviring from full backup, and rolling forward. 3. There is up-to one day of lost data. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

| reply to jaa said by jaa:said by Rojo:"Encrypt locally..." Agree, but how many do that? I use Carbonite, and that is the only way they do it. Encrypted then transmitted. I either use TrueCrypt volumes or AES-256 encrypted ZIP files with unique password for each archive. |

Prior to the rollout of DOCSIS 3 and bonded channels, it was a no-brainer -- the Boost channels were largely empty, but the standard channels were so saturated that they were useless.
If you dont see any value in it, just cancel it.. |

 | reply to JoeSchmoe007 Then it seems you have no need for Boost Plus and can cancel it.
I got Boost Plus because we run a Minecraft server, which requires about 0.3 Mbps per user. This allows us to easily host 15 to 20 users at a time.
With regular OOL, users were reporting lag, and I could see it was due to the 2 Mbps upload being maxed-out. |
