[HN9000] $40 Hughesnet Settlement

I got a $40 check in the mail today from some class action lawsuit against Hughesnet from when I had it a few years ago.

Anyone else get a check or participate?

it was from Walter vs Hughes settlement

The lawsuit alleges that in connection with Hughes’ satellite-based internet access service called HughesNet (formerly called DirecPC and DirecWay), (i) Hughes’ advertised download, upload and other internet speeds and Hughes’ disclosures regarding its Fair Access Policy were misleading, and (ii) the fees charged to subscribers when they cancelled their service before the end of their contract (“early termination fees”) violated the law.

Most likely those that received a check have Hughes for an ISP, and therefore are unable to get on the Internet to respond.

Yeah, I got one of those today for $5 too.

I have been off HN and using Millenicom for several years now but I remember some time ago someone said some of us should be receiving a settlement...

Yeah, its like one of those rebate checks that looks like a post card, it was in fact a check.

I haven't had hughesnet since 2010, so that's been a while since that settlement.

Nice to get a surprise $40 check in the mail.

Because of switches from a consumer account to a business account and, then, to a Spaceway consumer account, I had 3 separate Hughes accounts over a period of several years.

Today, I received 3 checks for $5 each because, evidently, each of those 3 accounts was eligible for its "share" of the settlement.

As I looked at the 3 checks, I couldn't help but have a couple thoughts pass through my mind.

First, every few months, some disgruntled Hughes customer will post on this board with threats to bring Hughes to its knees by starting a class action lawsuit, and that person will invite others to join in that suit. My 3 $5 checks and even the $40 checks that some are receiving are textbook examples of what is often said about class action suits, and that is that the only people who are going to make out well from a class action suit are the lawyers. If I were to make a special trip into town to cash my checks, I would easily use up over half of my "financial windfall" in gas getting to town and back home.

I preface my other thought by saying that during the 5+ years that I was a Hughes customer, satellite internet access was my only alternative to dial-up service, and I was happy to have an alternative. That said, I was able to get satisfactory service (most of the time) only because I learned how to troubleshoot issues on my end and how to deal with Hughes' alleged support to get issues on Hughes' end fixed. There is no question in my mind that, of all the various business entities that I've ever dealt with, Hughes was the worst in terms of support, customer service, reliability, and communication with its customers. I'm quite confident that those whose experience was worse than mine and who did not learn to troubleshoot their own issues or how to deal with Hughes, a check for $5 or for $40 is insignificant compensation for their less than satisfactory customer experience.

If you take a peek at the Hughes "support" forum you'll see that same level of Customer Support is alive and well.

Sadly many of the customers are unable to do a google search or even a search within the forum to see if there is an answer or workaround.
Or even a trend...

I had actually even forgot about this settlement.

I actually got another $40 check today, because like "One More Too" stated, I'd had two failed hughesnet accounts end of Dec 2010, then another one ECC set up because they thought the first one was a botched install....

I didn't make a "special trip" to town to cash them, but nice to have $80 you essentially forgot about...

but I am sure the lawyers in this case got MORE than their fare share.
