Knee pads that stay on knees

Once I got to be over 70, I found I needed some sort of knee protection when I was crawling in the attic (attic not tall enough to stand up in).

I went down to Lowe's and bought some inexpensive knee pads -

"AWP Non-Marring Rubber-Cap Knee Pads"

They work at protecting my knees but the things won't stay up on my knees when I walk - always slipping down as I walk. Is there a feature I should look for so that the pads stay on my knees when I stand up/walk?

I see construction workers and skate boarders using pads and they seem to stay up at all times - what is the secret?

You may want to try a sporting goods store and get something in your size as opposed to the one-size-fits all (which typically means nobody) from the big-box store.

If you prefer a hard shell look at products for roller skating (however unlike the product that you linked to, those may not be non-marring).

Otherwise soft padded knee protection (e.g. for volley ball players) may be more comfortable but will wear faster if you spend a lot of time on your knees.

Mr. Bob, I had the same problem as you, and tried many styles. I use them daily for my work. I finally gave the pads at the following link a try and I couldn't be happier. The only reason I didn't try them sooner is the cost. But they are worth the extra money, both for function and comfort, believe me. I often wear them for 8-10 hours a day.

Alright, the DTPro Hinged Ultra Comfort Knee Pads shown above look and read great but have 'reviews' from 1 to 5 on the Web site. But the warranty sounds great - "If you're not 100% satisfied with any item you purchase from Duluth Trading, return it to us at any time for an exchange or refund of its purchase price. Simple, unconditional, no nonsense, NO BULL."

As mentioned already, is there a difference between pads made for working people and those from sporting goods stores?

I will only use the pads about 5 times a year for light duty - just after getting older the natural padding for my knees has decreased and a pair of pads is great for the times I do need to do a project that requires kneeling.

I can't comment on sporting good store pads. But the ones I have tried in the past always moved on me, like the ones you had. They either dropped down, or turned to the side when you leaned to one side or the other. And some are uncomfortable in the way the straps goes around the crease in the back of your knee.

If you are only going to use them a few times a year I can see it being harder to justify the higher price. The paid I had before these ones were OK, but they rotated to the side of my knee as I worked. They would probably be OK for someone that won't use them too often. I don't think there is a Menards down there by you, so I don't know if you would be able to buy them locally. »www.menards.com/main/tools-hardw···2170.htm

I've taken to wearing jeans with the double layer of material when I have to do a lot of kneeling. I read meters for a small town once a month. It is a manual read. I have to kneel down, lift the lid, read the meter, and then close up. It is a half a day of walking and up and down. Knee pads would drive me nuts. The jeans with the double front knee panels work great. I'm kneeling on anything from dirt, gravel, or rocks. I'm 62 soon to be 63 so I understand the "it is not as comfortable as it used to be".

My knees are pretty bad, so when I tiled our bathroom I picked up a used pair of these for like 16 from Play it again sports.

Little bulky but then never slip down.

I'm sure there are differences. Most of the knee protection for workers is generally designed to provide comfort for people who spent extended periods of time working on their knees.

Knee protection for athletes comes in a wide variety depending on the target sport but generally it is designed to stay in place while being highly active. Protection is aimed more towards sudden impact (falls, etc.) then continuous pressure between knee and hard surfaces.

I have an old pair of ASICS Volleyball knee pads (looking much like International 2 ) that never gave me trouble with sliding regardless whether I wore them directly on my skin or over a pair of jeans.
They are comfortable to wear and don't restrict movement in any way. They consist of a layer of foam/rubber between stretchable fabric. The embedded pad is not very thick but covers a very large area and will continue to protect the knee even if the knee pad were to slide around somewhat.
However based on the link they are one-size and therefore may not work as well for everybody.

Bob, I have these, and they do not fall down while walking (at least for me). They close with velcro, and have served me well for about 3-4 years now. I'm just like you, I use them a few times a year, usually when I'm up in the attic. On the plus side, they do not rock, and taking them off is a breeze (just pull the tab to release the velcro). I got them at Lowe's as well.

Give 'em a shot, I think you'll be very happy.

These Safetek soft knee pads have nine layers of material to shape the pad to the contours of the knee to distribute weight evenly and eliminate pressure points.

The wide straps secure above and below the knee with hook-and-loop fastener strips to provide a comfortable fit and stay in place even when crouching or walking. The straps and outer shell of the pad are made of neoprene and Lycra to provide more flexibility to the straps and reinforcing the padding.

I have similar ones to rlt2562 and I hate them. The strap digs in the back as you need to have them tight so they don't drop.
I did flooring and these were awful. The hard outer plastic slides to much. I unstrapped the velcro and just slid around...much easier than digging into the back of my legs...

The Safetek and Duluth appear to resolve that issue with separate attachments at top of knee and lower.

Thanks Lurch! I actually went by your advice and ordered these last weekend, arrived last night. Wore them a bit today, will take a bit to get used to/broken in, but they are solid. Thanks for the heads up on these! The velcro on my old knee pads is shot as well as the gell support.

The above picture is where they'll be broken in. A 20'x8' shower room. Taking the tile up the wall slightly above those wall heaters.
